Re: blacks mixed bag 7/20
Blacks has been AMAZING this year. Some of the best soft structure I've seen in the past few years. The spotfin were schooling and tailing like crazy in April/May, and now the corbina are charging in the waves.

Quality Over Quantity - Mid Summer Surf Report
Sight-fishing between Blacks and Del Mar has been "excellent" this season, except for the whole catching part. This year is the first time I've seen spotfin tailing in the surf, but almost like a first-cast-curse, I've only been able to catch the first one I spotted (pun intended) in late May, using ...

Re: Fish recipes
This miso marinade is easy and delicious. I bake whole fish (rock, sheep, perch) in the over for about 45 min then the family devours.

Re: Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026
I actually didn't catch as much this past year, but I observed corbina and spotfin like never before and got a real grasp of reading and predicting structure with the rising tide.

Summer-time fishing in March
The water temps are up, the fish are out, and the spring swells are creating incredible structure. I saw schools of spotfin and a few lone corbina sliding in and out of the surf, some going tails up. Sand crabs are the size of roly-polies. Get out while you can!

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
Yahoo!!!!! I spent an hour casting at a school of about 6 until I finally tricked one to eat my fly. It's such a great feeling, especially when you lose track of the fly, when you feel the tug and see those big white lips open up.
Afterwards, some corbina showed up, and I had the first-world ...

Re: North County trips.
One of the friendly surfers said he saw a good school of chunky spotfin croaker. North Torreypines /Del Mar Border. Some big kelp stringers were coming in, but otherwise fair on the weeds.
I've been seeing schools of them and corbina at Blacks these past 2 weeks. They were feeding hard today ...

Re: Orange county Surf
If you're new to surf fishing, the best scenario is an incoming negative tide. This will not only allow you to see the exposed structure, but the fish will have been pushed off the beach for a few hours, and once the tide starts to fill in, they aggressively charge the feeding beds once the water is ...

Re: Pond D.K.
Forecast models are predicting an El Nino this summer, lasting into the winter, so hopefully it will fill up our reservoirs ... and then our leaders can flush it into the ocean.

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
. That is so cool. I hope to see something like that in my surf fishing trips. I am trying to explore new beaches . Thanks for the pictures and the information. Something I will be looking for when I am out fishing.
I just checked the webcams and it looks like Carlsbad has some really ...

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
Torrey pines is actually 3 miles away. You can also park at La Jolla farms and take a paved road down. It's still a little steep but you won't be taking steps up. Unfortunately it's a 2-hour time limit at top so it's really not worth it.

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
It's so weird how things can change within just a few days. I fished Friday (4/10), Tues, Thursday, and today (Fri), same location, same hole at Blacks, roughly the same tide, too. On 4/10, and 4/14, about 2 hours before the mid-low tide, spotfin we're going crazy in the hole. That's where and when ...

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
Just to add some data to my personal observations, SIO has recently published record-breaking ocean temperatures believed NOT to be caused by El Nino, but "persistent high pressure systems [which are] weakening winds and reducing upwelling, trapping heat along the coast."

Re: North County trips.
I was at Del Mar yesterday too, fishing the morning incoming tide. My guess is that it was a corbina. I saw several of them swimming up cuts onto crab beds between 20th and 27th Street.

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
@Neuroshima can you briefly describe how you fish the krabby patty fly in terms of moving it through the water? I am becoming more fly-curious each day.
It it varies, but often just 2 to 5-in strips in an erratic pattern. Strip strip pause, strip strip pause, strip strip strip strip, long pause ...

Black's 4/24
The fishing sucked. It was windy and the water felt cold. I only saw one spotfin and he was in the air.
