Re: Mission Beach 8/17

Got 2 of those sngf's myself a few days ago. Sometimes feels like you got into a ball of kelp, reeling in dead weight. The big ones can give you a workout on light gear.

Re: Mission Beach 8/17

Re: Mission Beach 8/17

Nice going to beat the skunk. I think those smaller SNGF bite like corbina.

Re: Mission Beach 8/24

My Buddies’ line was getting progressively worse as we fished last week. Turns out he had a crack in the ceramic tip. It was shaving slivers of line as he was reeling in. Looked like Spider Webs. He had to turn the Rod sideways to reel in the rest of the trip. It cost $6.10 to replace at The Longfin ...

Re: Mission Beach 8/24

I use straight 8lb mono and the fish don't seem to care. Of course, old weak line matters after you get bit :)

Btw, I've been using Sufix Tritanium for about 2 years now and I really like it. It is soft like Izorline XXX and I think slightly more abrasion resistant.

Mission Bay & LJ 8/24

Took my friend to Hospitality Point. We used mussel, anchovies, squid. He caught a baby calico but I got nothing. (Well, it WAS in the middle of the day, so I wasn’t expecting much.)

After dark and just before high tide, I went to north end of Marine St & cast out near the reef using grunion on 2/0 ...

Pacific Beach Thursday August 28

While walking the dog I watched a guy south of Crystal pier catch a corbina in the surf, so I figured I’d go fish some. I fished the surf south of Crystal pier, mostly in front of the lifeguard station, from maybe 8:30-11:00 this morning. I went under the pier for sand crabs and got 20+ with roe ...

Re: Mission Beach 9/5 - 9/7

Sounds like some fun outings! Those guitarfish pull hard too.

And... you got a reply from Bill Varney too!

Re: Mission Beach 9/5 - 9/7

Thanks for the report Joe. It's been rough for past month or so. I mentioned to Varney & if you listened/read his report last week, he believes the water temps are a tad too warm resulting in sand crabs (and fish) moving north. I think it also causes the heavy grass/kelp conditions. I recall we went ...

Re: Pacific Beach Monday September 8

I fished the surf south of Crystal pier about 6:45-7:45 this morning. Water is clear and warm, grass is minimal. Bite was furious early, then steady. Landed 4 BSP, 1 guitarfish and the smallest corbina I’ve ever seen.

Were you able to find sand crabs under the pier ? Fished by T 19-20 last week ...

Re: North County trips.

... I fish and chat with people I have met and am on a first-name basis with, as well as strangers. I like that aspect of surf fishing.

This has far and away been my favorite part of surf fishing this year - the conversations with people taking pictures, walking dogs, surfers, others ...

Re: North County trips.

Went out from 5pm until just after sunset. All perch on crabs and gulps. Lots of bait fish swimming around. Could see corbina swimming in close, no takers. 2 other guys fishing. 1 throwing a buck tail for halibut, the other using crabs.

Re: North County trips.

Hit the beach at 6:30. Caught 1 YFC (12.75”), 1 halibut (19.5”) and 3 perch. Caught YFC in less than 10 minutes. Halibut was caught 15 minutes after that. Lost another YFC at my feet. From 7 am to 8 am caught nothing. All caught on LC.
Switched from LC to gulps. From 8 am to 8:30 caught 3 perch, all ...

Re: Torrey Pines skunk city

I’ve found that Perch don’t work so well for my crowd. Mackerel, Sardines/Anchovies, and Squid are my Top Baits for ShaRays. I usually use about three feet of 80 pound leader, and an Egg sinker that slides right down to the bait, making casting easier. Leader to line is usually a blood knot on the ...

Re: Just perch again 9/19

Hi Joe, used a variety of baits. Frozen mussel & clam meat pieces which were effective when a perch would hit the whole bait but not so when they go into just a nibbling mode & strip the hook eventually. Also had some freeze dried lug worms which work well too if not just nibbling. Good luck this ...

Re: Mission Beach 9/19 - 9/21

Salted fresh mussel meat & left over blood worms. Firms them up real good. Likely would do the same for clams

Pacific Beach Tuesday Sept 23

I fished the surf south of Crystal pier about 8:30-10:00 this morning. Sand crabs are plentiful under the pier, with roe and some soft shells. Grass was minimal. Water felt colder. Bite was very slow, only a few bite surgically stealing roe. So I switched to the smallest crabs with roe I could find ...
