Re: Salted Bait

The one advantage of salted, dried and frozen blood worms is that they are tough.. I’ve had one worm last a session, with catching multiple fish.. Also, they are no trouble to use.. No stink, no mess, no special packaging.. They will sit in your pocket for a week and be as good as the day you pulled ...

1st Cast With A Sand Crab

IMG_0390cs.jpg
IMG_0394cs.jpg

My PB halibut from the surf at just over 27"... I don't really fish these guys as I prefer corbina and SFC but have caught a ton of them as by-catch, but mostly non-legals... Only a couple of legals... You would be surprised how many you can catch with sand crabs ...

Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024

On Labor Day sunset, I caught a legal barracuda from the surf, 28 inches, on a t-rigged white fluke in the La Jolla area.

I caught a short one from the sand in June, but this was a big surprise.

Re: Pacific Beach Friday May 16

The grass / kelp , (wrack ) is annoying , the San Diego area beach grooming is only from the high tide line up during the months the grunion run and their eggs hatch . If it were not for the preservation of the grooming code , PB and Mission beach would be a desert the grunion are not the only fauna ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

Braid is asking for trouble. It’s all the hype now so to each their own. I never use braid unless I’m frogging or dropping iron deep.

Crystal Pier 2025

1st morning at Crystal Pier… Every cast was a BSP… Except for a couple that I farmed and one cast that went unmolested…Ran out of SCs and was back at the room by 7:30 drinking coffee..Most were hand size, no dinks, except for a couple that were 12 to 14 inches… No corbs or croakers to be seen ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

12lb mono works great throwing lucky crafts. I throw them on conventional bass rod. No problem with distance on any jerk bait style with weight transfer system.

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

I generally do not have problems with wind knots on a spinning reel. I have been using Nanofil (discontinued), Gliss and J-braid. I do have problems with light braid (<12 lbs) digging in on a baitcaster, I tried https://www.amazon.com/FINS-Windtamer-Braided-Fishing-Line/dp/B0DD828CND?th=1 which some ...

12-pound pulls in a legal halibut in surf pretty well?

From experience I can say that a quality 12 lb mono is pretty tough ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

The Luna 's are very nice and I do use one for steelhead and salmon . The linked reel above looks pretty nice as well and would certainly work for all Inshore stuff . Have a good one . WR

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

I won't go into all my braid strategies, but I don't usually try to minimize diameter because it's almost all thinner than the leader material.

Those are nice reels, William. I remember you mentioning the Luna, and for a while, I pursued used 252 and 253, but someone else got them!

This would ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

One of my buddies exclusively fishes big halibut on 6-12lb. He has countless fish over 40lbs. on 12lb. Obviously those big ones are not surf.

12lb is strong. I always fish new mono. Using braid or mono for backing ; 1/2 to just under 3/4 of spool so fresh line change doesn’t break the bank. Try ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

And I want to catch that fish in Butch's sdfish user photo!

I caught that fish almost exactly a year ago…. It was a little over 25” and the most solid built corb I have ever seen…I would like to re-catch it as well…As far as I know it is still swimming out there.. I wish us both luck… Maybe me ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

Bait caster all the way. To each their own. Never had any distance issues except one time at night fishing the run and the wind was ripping so hard, even a heavy crocodile was flying backwards…it was comical.

Re: Crystal Pier 2025

5th day… Plenty of decent grade BSP on B2B SCs. Eel grass and kelp a pain but started clearing at the end of the session… Tried for SFC by the pier.. Nada.. Then got into the perch at a hole farther south.. water warm enough, but the shore break a little sloppy, so I got wet again… I was kicking up ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

8-10# would be fine.. But the 6#, 4# leader is my everyday setup.. I’m pretty sure I would have caught that spot fin croaker, if it didn’t wrap around a barnacle incrusted piling.. I caught that 25”+ corbina in my avatar a year ago today on that same set up…. I’ve caught mid sized bat rays and ...
