I’ll post a report when I come back. This is my first pelagic trip for my birthday so I’ll be renting gear!

Re: Fishy Trips Potential Next Week?
Just got off the Mission Belle. Landed 4 between 25 and a touch over 30, all fly line baits. 3 on the 70 year old jigstick and one on the 60 year old trueline. Tight lines and following seas my friends...

Big ones!
Went out on the Old Glory and it was super fun...we went all the way to Tanner on an overnight boat (big thanks to the Captain). Got there about an hour after first light and there were 30+ boats there already on anchor. we did the same and in short order I hooked (and subsequently landed) a BFT ...

Dorado zarrandeado
So I butterflied out a dorado to cook for my family's early labor day party. It's not a true zarrandeado since I didn't do it over hot coals but 45 min on the smoker and a few on the grill for some color does the trick.

Old Glory 9/16
Howdy. I wasn't gonna write this up but a fellow sdfish member inspired me to do so. I did a turn around trip so two in a row. The first trip went as follows... Arrived in the zone early enough to get a 2 hour night bite which was super surprising to me, fished hard but nothing was cooperating. Grey ...

Calico Bass along the reefs
Very steady beach fishing in late June. Tallied 30+ calicos, 8 short white seabass to about 22", and 2 legal halibut - all gently released except the halibut. Saw some relative beginners get a legal halibut yesterday from the rocks throwing a swimbait. :D

Re: Torrey Pines 08/04
Good size YFC. Way to go. How were the conditions, i.e., kelp & grass in the water? PB & south has been a mess past 3 days, unfishable
It was actually not bad at all, fairly clean with some grass here and there. I started out casting from the shore to about 60-70 feet out with zero success ...

Re: Where to throw LC tommorrow.
Guess we're all a little late to the party and you're probably on your way up as I type this. There's 50 miles of coast line between TP and DP, so I'd just find whatever is most convenient for you.
Halibut season is warming up and grunion are expected this weekend, so your LC might be the best bet ...

Re: Hook size for surf C-rig
If you really care about avoiding gut hooking, I suggest that you use inline (non-offset) circle hooks. 95% of time your catch will be lip-hooked, like in the picture below.

Hook set would be different with circles and will take some time to get use to. I use them ...

Re: Salted Bait
Butch, aka @Midnightpass is an expert at curing bloodworms.
Mike I’m not much of an expert on anything… But I do save and cure my blood worms.. I believe they usually work about as well as fresh.. I lay them on a piece of newspaper, salt them with non-iodized salt and let them dry overnight in ...

Re: Salted Bait
The one advantage of salted, dried and frozen blood worms is that they are tough.. I’ve had one worm last a session, with catching multiple fish.. Also, they are no trouble to use.. No stink, no mess, no special packaging.. They will sit in your pocket for a week and be as good as the day you pulled ...

My PB halibut from the surf at just over 27"... I don't really fish these guys as I prefer corbina and SFC but have caught a ton of them as by-catch, but mostly non-legals... Only a couple of legals... You would be surprised how many you can catch with sand crabs ...

Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024
On Labor Day sunset, I caught a legal barracuda from the surf, 28 inches, on a t-rigged white fluke in the La Jolla area.
I caught a short one from the sand in June, but this was a big surprise.
