Re: Mission Beach 3/18

Received a report yesterday that a lot of sand crabs of all sizes are being found along Tamarack to the north of Carlsbad State Beach... :D Shouldn't be long before they start carrying eggs and begin to lose their shells...game on!

PB 3/27

On the sand at 6:30 this morning, just after the crest of the earlier high tide. Not my favorite to fish a falling tide right after a high, but I go when I can. Nursery time once again with the critters, 4 dinks, one 8 incher; actually call it 5 dinks with this little guy. Looked for crab Dink.jpg s ...

Unicorn hunting success

Not a particularly current report... But there was a nice window that had the San Diego stripers chewing on the beach a while back. Landed this one and lost a larger one a short time later. Took me back to the east coast, pulling stripers out of heavy surf on proper tackle. Next goals are land based ...

Mission Beach 3/29

Fished north Mission Beach this morning. Got my line in the water by 6:30 and just wrapping up now at 9:30. Winds picked up as the tide started to recede, which makes it feel like a grind, which tells me it’s time to go home.

Pretty decent conditions today. Choppy water but smaller waves and swell ...

Summer-time fishing in March

The water temps are up, the fish are out, and the spring swells are creating incredible structure. I saw schools of spotfin and a few lone corbina sliding in and out of the surf, some going tails up. Sand crabs are the size of roly-polies. Get out while you can!

Re: Summer-time fishing in March

I found plenty of mid-size Sand Crabs about 18 inches deep, below the tiny ones. I managed around 30 in a half hour. Unfortunately, not a bite on them this trip. Usually when they are tough to find, every one gets bit.

Mission Beach 3-30

Fished Gulp sandworms for the first time, 2 inch variety (has he lived under a rock all this time?). Can only report pervasive tappity taps and missing tails for 90 minutes beginning at sunrise. Only bites were basically within 15 feet of me. Smooth and overcast conditions. Threw the kastmaster a ...

Re: Dog Beach, OB

Those Corbies are tough right now, I was throwing at sight fish all morning for not a bite! Some were really nice. They got that way chowing down. Still no interest in my perfectly displayed Baits. Frustrating!

South Mission 3/31

Dead sea conditions this morning, like a lake. Knee high surf, clean water but little movement, hardly any swell. Not a nibble for an hour then a good bite for a hand size perchie on a dried lug. Problem was only had 1 more worm left in the pack. Should have re-supplied, aargh! Went to gulp camo ...

3-31-2026 Strand legal session!

Fished the skinny water during dropping tide this afternoon at Silver Strand. Very mellow conditions, light salad, clear water. I was spooked by a huge stingray 10 min before this 23.5 inch guy inhaled my chrome and orange kastmaster. Felt like a sudden dead weight at first, then the drag peeling ...

Huge barred surfperch

I was entertaining myself on the I.B. pier when I saw 'Francisco' reel in the biggest BSP I have personally seen. He had 2 others in this size range in his bucket. I made such a big deal out of it that he insisted I pose with *his* fish for a photo! Since I didn't ask permission to use his face on ...

Re: Huge barred surfperch

I was fishing an old SCSF surf fishing Fish-off/tournament in Newport Beach.. There was a family (Not associated with our group) that had one rod, fishing bait-and-wait, in a sand spike, that started bouncing... The Dad told his 8-9 yr old Son to go see what it was.. The kid hauled in a 17" BSP ...

PB 4/14

At 6:20 am, checked out under the pier area for sand crabs. Still micros, BB size. Beach loaded with salad (photo) + a lot in the wash as well. Barely fishable but decent perch bite for about an hour. Four 6 - 8 inchers, bait de jour mussel & blood worms. Did not see any signs of corbina or croakers ...
