Torrey Pines 4/9

Post by Nelson 1 »

Went to Torrey pines today because my wife wanted to see the peregrine falcons nesting on the cliffs. She has binoculars with a tripod. So I brought my fishing pole and sand worms. Tide was very low it was around 9:00 in the morning. There were sand crabs down there but the guys I was talking to said they weren't working. Which I thought was weird because I thought everybody wanted to fish with sand crabs. But still had fun caught three little Perch about 8 inches. There's a lot of guys that do bait and wait at Torrey Pines.. Never fish bait and wait at the surf, might have to give it a try. I'm just afraid somebody might run into my line.

Is 'bait and wait' when they just put the rod in a holder? I would have the same concerns if so but I guess if there isn't much foot traffic it would be fine. Probably not a great idea anywhere south of Torrey Pines, though!

Might just be a little too early for the crabs, especially if they're too small, no eggs, etc. Or maybe the fish just weren't hungry for them today for whatever reason. I think the perch just mess with us sometimes

I recall there was a bucket brigade of bait & wait guys who fished Torrey every weekend, 2-3 rods each for some of them. I remember someone posted a photo showing about 30 rods in holders lined up about 25 yards apart. Maybe someone knows if they're still at it ?

You are right about the bait and wait. I was in fishing Mission Beach and I was looking down at my hook to but a bait on it and some guy ran into me. And the beach was not crowded he had the whole Beach to go around me.
