Mission Beach 8/23

Fished the incoming tide at Mission Beach from 6am-8am, up until things got a little choppy. Heavy fog, somewhat strong currents, but a nice reprieve from the hotter temperatures inland!

Decent day from a quantity standpoint, 8 perch in total. Mussels were working well in the complete absence of ...

Solana Beach 8/23

Little change of scenery for me this foggy AM. Nice enough conditions notwithstanding some moderate salad . . enough to be a nuisance but fishable. Line in the water about 6:20 with mussel meat the bait to start. Not much action, just nibblers & bait stealing for about an hour, no takers. Switched ...

Right on the surface of the water.. They were also using live smelt. All I brought was shrimp and sandworms i had on luck . I ...

2 Beaches . . . Short Session 8/25

Was going to fish both sides of the little jetty (groin) at Ocean Beach this morning. Has been a good spot in the past for slab perch, yfc's & corbina. The beach at 06:30 am, water was just as bad, not fishable.

Newport Beach

Offshore has become difficult with Bait Problems and 300 boats chasing 25 Kelp Paddies. I took a local Kid, Jake Surf Fishing just to check it out. We had a tough time getting Sand Crabs in the beginning, but conditions were perfect. We landed a big Corbina, a tough Guitarfish that fought hard for ...

8/28 Imperial Beach

Late report on my outing yesterday at IB, first time back in a number of years. I initially set up by T 7 north of the pier. Water coloration & conditions were OK, better than recently at the Strand & Coronado but the surf & SW swell was big. Could not keep my line in front of me. After 15 minutes ...

Re: 8/28 Imperial Beach

Sounds like a good outing, YFC are hard fighters. Even if I.B. oftentimes has dirty water, I like the vibe down there. The pier scene is always festive. If the sewage issue ever gets fixed south of the border, I.B. real estate prices will double.

Where are the Grunion

Well, I went to Del Mar beach last night, 08/29 and stayed till around midnight. No grunion. I was hoping to get some fishing in that night or the next day. I did fish a little that night, but the waves were huge and breaking far from shore. On a plus side, there are tons of sand crabs the size of ...

Re: Where are the Grunion

The grunion have been mostly running, in big numbers, up in Ventura through Santa Barbara Counties. I believe they are following the cooler water north. Last week was the last scheduled run but if you follow their runs they occur during both new and full moon periods...so maybe a few last ...

HBB8 Tourney 9/12

Honey Badger Baits had another tournament yesterday at Mission Beach from 7:30-11:30. The day started off cloudy with little wind and an incoming tide, great conditions and the bite did not disappoint! I brought 2 dozen ghost shrimp from Seaforth, using some cotton thread to keep em on the hook as I ...

Re: Torrey Pines 9/15

Wow, sounds like Mission & PB a few months ago. Very frustrating I know. Mission has actually perked up the last 2-3 weeks. Still mostly small to medium perch with some 10"+ models now & then but a few spot fins & good size corbina in the mix as well. Have been thinking of doing TP but you may have ...

The 15 Pounder

It was a random Saturday in April where my tournament partner and I actually had the day off. Normally Saturdays start with alarms going off at ungodly hours and us finishing our sleep in the launch ramp line somewhere two hours away.

Not today.

Instead of a road trip, we made the grueling five ...
