Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?
So, Fall is when the sand crabs start to hibernate. There are great alternatives, though. Berkley Gulp! sandworms are very good. You can, either, drag them in using a Carolina rig, or still-fish them with a hi-low rig like I do. Maybe add a little scent to them for added attraction. Guys in the ...

Hey fellow surf anglers,
I'm going to be giving a surf fishing seminar at Tackle Day, November 1 at Fisherman's landing. I'll be covering the equipment I use and will demonstrate how I hook and fish baits like lug/bloodworms, sand crabs, ghost shrimp, mussel... and whatever other baits I can find ...

Mission Beach 10/26
Pretty much a copy & paste from yesterday at Mission/Pacific Beach.
I moved a bit more than usual today, no particular reason other than feeling like doing so. Caught a tiny perch early close to the pier and worked my way south. Brought in 7-8 perch on the day, including one keeper than I just ...

Re: Re: Mission Beach 3/18
Congrats on the legal and other critters. I may try Black's tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon I saw many deep pockets along a wide stretch during low tide.
Got guitarfish, small ray, and legal hali on Torrey Pines today, everything on LC 110.

Torrey Pines 3-19-2026
On the water before sunrise, there was already someone fishing in front of the lagoon. I worked my way north of the inlet, chucking the blue and chrome kastmaster into gentle rollers. Shivered my way through some missed bites, no waders today I decided. Doh! Missed a bite then lost a hooked fish ...

Jacksmelt tug hard for their size! I saw many schools of jacksmelt in deep holes at Black's a few days ago.Andrew_WOT wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2026 12:21 pm Today was raining jaksmelt day, a new species for me. Got like 5, all in 1ft range, decent fighters. Everything on LC110.

HBB8 3/21
Went down to mission beach to fish the HBB8 (Honey Badger Baits) tournament this morning. Tons of holes from tower 11 through 13, but they didn’t fill in til a bit later since the low tide was around 5:45am. Fished the LC 110 for a few hours, switched to c rig after some nice angler gifted me a cup ...

Re: North County trips.
Tamarack 3-22-26. 1 8" BSP on the c-rig grub. I hooked something so large I could not pull it in and then it shook the hook.

Mission Beach 3/29
Fished north Mission Beach this morning. Got my line in the water by 6:30 and just wrapping up now at 9:30. Winds picked up as the tide started to recede, which makes it feel like a grind, which tells me it’s time to go home.
Pretty decent conditions today. Choppy water but smaller waves and swell ...

Summer-time fishing in March
The water temps are up, the fish are out, and the spring swells are creating incredible structure. I saw schools of spotfin and a few lone corbina sliding in and out of the surf, some going tails up. Sand crabs are the size of roly-polies. Get out while you can!

Redondo White Sea Bass 3/30
Caught off the surf using a Yo-Zuri Hydro Minnow LC 150, sardine pattern.
Gray light, 6:35 am, two hours before peak high tide.
Water temp 64 degrees.
Battlestar Tape only measures up to 28", this fish came out to 31".

3-31-2026 Strand legal session!
Fished the skinny water during dropping tide this afternoon at Silver Strand. Very mellow conditions, light salad, clear water. I was spooked by a huge stingray 10 min before this 23.5 inch guy inhaled my chrome and orange kastmaster. Felt like a sudden dead weight at first, then the drag peeling ...

Huge barred surfperch
I was entertaining myself on the I.B. pier when I saw 'Francisco' reel in the biggest BSP I have personally seen. He had 2 others in this size range in his bucket. I made such a big deal out of it that he insisted I pose with *his* fish for a photo! Since I didn't ask permission to use his face on ...

Re: Summer-time fishing in March
Yahoo!!!!! I spent an hour casting at a school of about 6 until I finally tricked one to eat my fly. It's such a great feeling, especially when you lose track of the fly, when you feel the tug and see those big white lips open up.

Re: Orange county Surf
If you're new to surf fishing, the best scenario is an incoming negative tide. This will not only allow you to see the exposed structure, but the fish will have been pushed off the beach for a few hours, and once the tide starts to fill in, they aggressively charge the feeding beds once the water is ...

Black's 4/24

Mission Beach 4/25
Fished north Mission Beach from 6:00-8:30, slightly after the peak high tide as it receded. It was fairly windy when I stepped out of my car but there was no turning back!

The 15 Pounder
It was a random Saturday in April where my tournament partner and I actually had the day off. Normally Saturdays start with alarms going off at ungodly hours and us finishing our sleep in the launch ramp line somewhere two hours away.
Not today.
