Carlsbad 8/28

After work session from 4pm-7pm.The little bit of rain just before helped clear the beach of people quite nicely. Caught 5 yellowfin croaker and 2 surf perch. Almost all my bites were past the breakers barely anything in close. Tried for halibut on a double dropshot with no luck but doubled up on ...

Re: North County trips.

only got to fish an hour this weekend after work in the rain. Went to cardiff and saw birds diving. Tried the jerk bait and spoon but no luck. Saw a few other dudes fishing and I think I saw one pull in a bass and the other a big croaker. Not sure what they used and how they were managing with all ...

Torrance Beach 22 Sept 2025

I made a few long casts with hard shells and found a couple of croaker. Then I found some soft shells and it was fun times catching corbina in close.

Re: PB and MB 10/3

Nice catching!

I've only caught croaker on gulp sand crabs and even then, only in the peak summer months.

I'd recommend using a device that allows you to sift a lot of sand and find something else besides a normal hard shell... soft shell, crab with egg, "crispy" crab, or a crab about to molt and ...

North Redondo Corbina 10/5

I found a medium/large sand crab that looked like a soft shell, but was hard when I touched it. I thought, "If I was fooled, maybe a corbina would be fooled too." Sure enough, a short cast into less than 12" of water found this corbina.

late report 10/10

Friday 7-11 am. A good amount of walking in the first hour and a half to try to find a break in probably 3 miles of shallow/flat sand bottom due to accumulated sand from previous months. Finally, I came across a small cut next to a shallow sandbar with a good amount of N current from the short ...

Re: Where do you buy fish and seafood in San Diego?

Inregards to the sushi / sashimi....
Im sure alot of us have done it & immediately caught, sliced & eaten yellowtail & tuna on the boat...
Thats not the best practice, should always be frozen to kill-off any parasites / worms....
Freezing fish is what makes it sushi grade...

Flash freezing fish (tuna, escolar and moonfish) with dry ice

So last week I finally made it out to the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market and picked up some Ahi, Albacore, Opah and Escolar fillets. I love sashimi and poke but I know it's not recommended to eat raw fish because there is a risk of food poisoning or contracting a parasite.
Basically it has to be ...

Slowly added some pieces of dry ice. It's best to make the pieces the size of a golf ball or so and add them slow so the liquid doesn't boil over the top
Dry ice is very cold and will burn your skin almost instantly so handle with care!

Re: Flash freezing fish (tuna and escolar)

Once the temperature dropped below 30-35F I added few more pieces of dry ice and started putting the fish in
I kept monitoring the temperature so when it went above 30F I just added some more ice

Re: Flash freezing fish (tuna and escolar)

When you're ready to eat your fish, just put the packets into a room temperature water for about an hour and it's ready to go!
The sashimi came out excellent, as fresh as it gets.

P.S. Don't try this at home 8-)

Thanks for the instructions. For those who try this, make sure you're in a well ventilated area, or you can pass out from the CO2.

Pretty sure this is not a re-launch of the old site. Why the comparison?

Only the format was cloned. These are different people, or else why launch a new site, when the old one could have been tidied up and rearranged a bit. I am an administrator on a couple of sites, and administrators can ...
