Spotfin on the fly
My first spotfin! Red krabbypatty fly at Blacks, 7:00AM, -1ft tide. Kelp was a nuisance and got worse as the tide came in. I did not see any corbina.

Picky corbina and hot perch summer
I went fishing several times over the past few weeks at several beaches in north county - ponto, beacons, grandview, tamarack, etc.
First thing I noticed is the perch bite is way stronger than usual at this time of year. I feel like it's usually at-most 2:1 at this time of year BSP to other species ...

Re: Picky corbina and hot perch summer
I tend to agree on the perch this year. so many around that its almost just luck if a bean or croaker get to your sand crab before they do. A lot of surf guys, including myself, are having the same experience trying to get the corbinas working the shallows to hit their presentation. As one member of ...

South Mission Corbina
Got out yesterday 14.jpg morning to see if my comment to @cajunjacket's "picky corbina" post would come to fruition. It was perfect conditions and finding a huge hole was the bonus. Picked off 3 during the last hour of the outgoing tide, 14", 16" and 18". Bite faded off during the low slack but ...

San Clemente SB 7/21
This beach can be tough to fish with any kind of swell, and yesterday was enough to make it a little difficult. The water seemed cooler and there was some salad in it to add too the work.. Anyway it was fun fishing with my Grandson again, and he out fished me with 4- BSP and a 15” corbina… I beat ...

Re: Picky corbina and hot perch summer
Landed an 18" spotfin this past weekend. Put up a great fight. Also landed a few corbina that put up some nice fights as well. BSPs aplenty within 20 yds, while the croakers are biting further out.

South Mission 8/16
No perch biters this morning at SMB, just nibblers. Very slow for first hour then got 2 solid hits. Lost one but got this one up on the sand . . 18".
Bite want dead after 7:30, swell & wind came up from SW.

North County bite turned on
Croaker on gulp worms and probably 6 perch as well. Nothing too great size wise but fun nonetheless.

Re: Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024
Assume you knew not a hali peeling your line ! Great catch & congrats !
Thanks yes a novelty and very memorable event! It was almost dark, fish was pulling pretty hard at times. I was thinking a big calico. But I had no idea what it was until it was laying on the wet sand. Even then, it took me ...

Pacific Beach, Sept 24-25
Fished south of Crystal Pier Tuesday and Wednesday morning with sand crabs. Water temp around 67, light grass with the occasional big chunk of kelp. Water seemed a little sandy to me. Bite was slow but fish were bigger than what I normally catch here. Caught 3 BSP Tuesday. Caught 2 YFC and 4 BSP ...

Redondo Beach striper 9.29
Caught off the surf at Redondo, using the Chika Chika pattern Lucky Craft. 20lb braid on a Penn Fierce III, 9'0 Okuma Hawaiian Custom.
I cast into a noticeable rip current and was quickly bit by this 26"er. I kept casting into the school in hopes of landing another. Hooked up twice more, but both ...

Pacific Beach Monday Oct 7
I fished the surf south of Crystal Pier from about 8-10am this morning. Water still cold, 64ish. Wave action down some from the weekend. Grass was light, not a problem. Sand crabs getting scarce except under pier, and sand crabs are generally getting smaller in size. Current pulled south to north so ...

Corbina are still around
Howdy folks. I haven't been fishing much, but have a a few recent opportunities to visit the beach. The water is colder, but I still saw some beans in the surf. My wife got a new job at Scripps. Today they gave her a tour of the pier, and she sent me a picture of this huge school.

1st Trip Of The Year
Grandson called and asked if I'd like to fish with him and his girlfriend.. Sure... So we made plans to fish Alamitos Peninsula with some lug worms... We tried the bay side 1st for no bites.. Very clear water, but no sign of bait or anything else... Then we jumped over to the ocean side and it was ...

Re: Grunion run tonight 3/29/25
**UPDATE**
The grunion were there! Not huge #'s, but plenty to have some fun and see an amazing display of nature! Pretty big wave power, the big washups seemed to have the most fish coming in. Put about a dozen in a bucket just to observe, used a few for live bait later, but they kept getting ...
