Otay 3/2 (don't fear the algae)

Post by CorsoEnthusiast »

After having been focused on El Cap the last couple of weekends, I decided to hit Otay this morning despite the algae warnings. With my January trip up there being a skunk my goal today was to get my first Otay bass of 2025. I met up with @Dannicus at first light and that first Otay bass of 25 didn't take long at all as I caught myself a ~ 1.5 pounder about three casts in. A fish every few casts and I had my limit before the first hour was up. Tules, tules, tules and more tules. We moved to another spot and I managed to pick up several more - all in about the 1.5-2lb range. Dannicus was slaying them too! He stayed out longer than I did so I'm interested to see his report later.

As for the algae - I’ve fished San V when it was much, MUCH worse than it is at Otay right now. Just saying.

I ended the day with 11 bass, all cookie cutter clones with the biggest at 2.14. Not a big bag but a really fun one nonetheless.

I didn't stay too long after you left brother, just long enough to pick up a couple more along some rocks with a jig in about 10 feet. You were killing it out there! Great fun and good conversation with a great guy @CorsoEnthusiast .

I ended up with an even dozen with the best being a 2.4 pictured. Looking forward to the next trip. My goal this week is to have a bald eagle swipe a double digit bass from my hand so that I can one up @Pourboy and his osprey/spottie vid.

Apparently he's done this with others. Definately not his first rodeo. I talked to a guy at the dock afterward who said he did this to a shore fisherman who didn't want to give up his catch. The guys hands got shredded.

That was pretty cool. Two separate times I have been on the water at el cap, and had one of the goldens eagles dive bomb a duck on the water. Both times less than 30 yards away. Just like an osprey. Craziest thing was the second time, I was explaining what I’d witnessed in that area years before. 30 seconds after I stopped speaking it happened again. Thought I was being pranked . Each time the bird flew to the bank to start plucking the feathers while the ducks mate went nuts doing circles not knowing what to do
