4/12 New species 4 me!
Got to Shelter Island around 550, and being the creature of habit I am, started by the launch with the dropshot for nada, not even a mack or lizard fish. packed up and went to the Bali Hai dock. Yes I know, no fishing, but I'm usually gone by 7 or so and the employees have always been cool, even giving me ice when I caught something worth taking home. Casting towards the open water and got 2 lizards and lots of missing tails from my Gulp smelt. Switched to a slow pitch jig and a few casts later something decent hits and starts pulling, I knew it wasn't a bass by the way it fought. Got it up and it was my first Corvina! (Corbina?) measured just under 13.5, missing a pectoral fin. Got a couple pics and sent it back. Turned around and made a couple casts towards the rocks and another good hit and fight. Again I knew it wasn't bass. It was a YFC! Haven't caught one of those in about a year. Another couple pics and sent it back. Slow day overall and I called it at 9am, but happy to add a new species to my list.

Congrats! Those are nice surprises! Interested in seeing an example of what slow-pitch jig you used.

It was a Reaper Slow Pitch Micro Reaper 15g Glow/Chovy. I don't have a pic but you can see it on their website. I'm a big fan of the micro reapers, they seem to catch anything!kastmaster wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 8:33 am Congrats! Those are nice surprises! Thanks, interesting look to those lures. I've caught shortfin corvina and yellowfin croaker on kastmasters, they also seem to catch anything!Jussdone805 wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 10:10 amIt was a Reaper Slow Pitch Micro Reaper 15g Glow/Chovy. I still haven't tried kastmasters in saltwater, I have a few in my freshwater gear for my Sierra trips. I need to give them a shot. The reapers have a really nice wobble action on the fall. I let them fall, pop them up, fall, repeat. Sometimes slow or fast retrieves with little pauses. I've caught halibut, macks, lizards, spotties, calicos, and now, corvina and YFC on them.kastmaster wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2026 11:41 amThanks, interesting look to those lures.
