After my outing 2 weeks ago, and seeing a lot of people hammering ‘em at Cap, I wanted to get back out there and get another chance at it. The wind was blowing pretty good early, and it made things a little tougher than I was expecting early, but got the first fish within a few minutes of hitting the spot. Unfortunately lost the next handful or so of bites. Just didn’t have a good feel of my bait & the bites with the wind, and wasn’t setting the hook well enough. Had a a few throw it on the jump, and also had one come off my crankbait.
Last time around my goal was to cover a bunch of water, but this time I really wanted to *slow down* and stick to my guns. Commit to my spots, and commit to my presentations. Luckily it ended up working out! I started getting a good feel for the Neko again, and it brought in the majority of fish for me. Ended up with 10 fish over the morning, a full FIVE TIMES more than my last outing there haha. Most were around the 2 pound range, with a few just over 2 and a half.
Got to give a big thanks to all of you, but especially @Pourboy and @CorsoEnthusiast . I’ve probably spent more time watching Chris catch largemouth than I’ve spent actually fishing for them myself at this point, so to go out there and get on them myself was a big confidence boost! Seeing guys like Jeremy out there killing it, and providing tips has been super helpful as well.
And lastly, you guys weren’t kidding about that mud! Gotta be careful where you launch & land out there. I launched in a good spot, but had to fight the mud for my fins and then my water shoes on the way back in. I could totally see some twisted knees and ankles trying to work your way out of the muck!

Wind is so not my friend either. Not feeling bites let alone my boat/craft moving too. As much as I hate speeding up the preferred fall rate, I will go up a jig or sinker weight size to maintain better bite recognition.

It’s an interesting thing, especially when compared to fishing the salt. Find a huge swath of eel grass, and work it all over. The wind doesn’t really screw up your approach. But in the fresh it can really throw off the angles and approach when you’re drifting and trying to work a very tight zone. So just another thing to get used to out there. Fishing east winds in the morning, not getting weirded out when it glasses off, and then fishing west winds all in the course of a 6 hour session haha.JWall wrote: Fri Mar 27, 2026 6:14 pm Wind is so not my friend either. I definitely switched to the free rig for a bit just to try to stick to the bottom a little better and maintain that feel.

I can attest, I am part of the twisted knee club, and am now looking at knee replacement surgery this summer.
