Costa Rica August 2025

Post by Roncador »

So the last couple weeks have been rather eventful for me. Flew up to San Francisco for the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary celebration August 1-3 anr the day after I got back I flew down to Costa Rica with my grandpa and our buddy Pete. Stayed down there for 6 days and fished 3. Was definitely a cool experience and got to catch several new species. I was most impressed with the variety of deep water groupers. I caught start studded groupers, brown grouper, coffee grouper, and even a parrot sand bass! While we were trolling for marlin bait I hooked up on a baby almaco jack or pacific amberjack next to a floating tree. Ripped half his face off bringing him in so I made him into sashimi within minutes. Absolutely delicious! The second day of fishing i caught my first ever blue Marlin roughly 300lbs took me 20 minutes to get it in. My 80 year old grandpa caught a much larger one that took him 1 hour and 23 minutes. Our last day I was majorly disappointed as we wasted pretty much the whole day going after little football yellowfin that didn't wanna bite. Especially with the full moon the night before. Also I didn't get to really do much inshore. No pez gallo, no pargos, and no snook. Only put in maybe an hour inshore and caught a 80lb or so white tip reefshark that faught like a big catfish on marlin gear lol. All in all it was a neat experience but if I were to go back it wouldn't be to that tourist trap hell hole that is tamarindo, thats for sure! Anyways hope you all appreciate the pictures. Sorry I couldn't just post them in here I had allot of issues uploading files so I just made a slide show instead..

Nice report, I am planning on going to either Costa Rica, Panama, or Puerto Rico next year.

It's great to hear you are out there rocking your life, George. It's always especially neat to hear that you and your grandpa are in on it together.

If your gonna do Panama make sure you go with a reputable lodge. I hear the situation really isn't very good down there and not the safest. Good luck wherever you do go!

Yeah im trying to get in as much time with him as possible, although difficult. He still works 5 days a week doing auto upholstery and doesn't seem to wanna stop anytime soon haha. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing as id say its helped keep him him around and strong.. Hoping to get in a cabo trip with him around February for his birthday and maybe again in June for the roosters. Kinda up in the air but may do a San Quintin trip next month which would be nice. I really haven't done much local fishing this year in all honesty outside of a few half days and the occasional shorepound. I need to get back on my grind when it comes to corvina. But its honestly gotten difficult for me. I go from catching almost a hundred in a year to not even catching one in over a year! Downright sad haha.. Anyways thanks for stopping by Russel!
