El cap

Post by Dramad1 »

1st time in the kayak out there. Lake was low, windy, and lots of chop and wakes from the boaters.
Started off missing a few in the front, cruised over to the middle right side after an hour in the front. To much wind and chop.
Traveled across to the other side. Thought I was gonna get t boned by some dude flying right at me when I was in the middle of crossing. Luckily he saw me and swerved.

Had a few more bites but missed the hook sets, such suttle bites. Barely felt them. Missed the hook sets when I realized there was a fish on.

Day was slow for me, thought about cranking or throwing a craw/creature. Decided to stick to my unique worms, free rig, drop shot and wacky.

1 o'clock, it turned on for me landed back to backs. Cruised the grassy hills. 3-6ft of water. Missed a few. Grabbed 10 between 1 and 430. Biggest was 3.20 smallest was about 9" average about 2- 2 1/2.
Started to get the "time to go" vibes around 430, hooked into a fish, it dove into some rocks and grass, kinda stuck, got my kayak behind it, it got unstuck and ran straight into my trolling motor. Broke my line but the fish line was wrapped in my prop and the fish was still on for a minute fighting the spot lock until the line broke. He came up and gave me a splash right after.

Wind started picking up, decided to travel.closer to the launch, made a dozen cast, fish were spooking out on the graph, decided it was time to go.
Got to the launch ramp, tied off on the very end, put my wheels down, and walked up to grab my car. Came back and untied the kayak and was walking her down the dock into shallow water. Got to the end and went to pull her up on my diy trailer, and then I noticed something was wrong. Kayak was leaning, wth. One of my wheels popped out and sunk to the bottom. Tried to spot it, didn't see it, gonner. Fml. Went to load onto the trailer, but the dam kayak was so heavy and awkward. I was fighting the ramp, the kayak kept sliding off the trailer. Had to partially unload the kayak to get it up on the trailer. So embarrassing, dock fisherman watching me. Other guys trying to get there boats out looking at me. It was a struggle. I had to pull myself together a few times cause it sucked and I looked like an idiot. It happens to all of us at some point. But yeah, lost my right wheel somewhere at the launch ramp, boonedox landing gear wheel, fml. If anyone finds it, id live to have it back-finders fee :).
Overall it was a good day on the water, Lil mishaps at the end of the day, buti got through it, got some fish, beautiful day.

No shame whatsoever in mechanical issues. We’ve all had them. Nice catches in the meantime!

Exactly!
We all have had some type of issues with our fishing vessels at one time or another, but having a good day on the water is what is most important. Really enjoyed your post as there was lots of detail and felt like I was there with you going through all the things of your fishing adventure at El Cap. Thank you for sharing and hope your next trip is flawless. Tight lines to ya always :-)

It happens to all of us. One of my last trips there, my Son was backing in the boat and it let it slip out of my hand and it was just floating in front of the launch ramp at 6 AM. It was turned sideways and blocking everyone from launching. Felt so bad and dumb.

As for the wheel. just wait a few months and go back. They way they have drawn down that lake this year, your wheel will be out of the water and you can just pick it up. Hey there is a silver lining to just about everything is you just look hard enough. Hahaha
