South Bay 11/16

Post by galen »

Hadn’t gotten the kids out in a while. First time for my youngest casting and hooking her own fish, pretty awesome. Mommy got a surprise slimer, that was cool. Also brought the trout rod to target smelt for something different, got a handful on the Roostertail. Fun times.

Has anyone tried eating smelt? According to the internet, they’re not bad table fare.

When I was a kid, I ate just about everything we'd catch off the OB pier.

Scaled, gutted, and grilled whole, no matter what species.

Smelt were good, a bit stronger taste than queenfish or yellowfin croaker.

I've heard they are wormy, but no personal experience... They are stinky, slimy things though...

I was out on a float tube, we probably saw each other at some point. It was an incredible day down there.

Yeah clear skies, not too cold. I gotta hand to all the tubers, I’m too much of a wuss to be in the water like that. What happens when the wind really picks up?
