When fishing for bass close to shore with a weedless lure, toss the lure onto the shore if possible and then hop it into the water. Or throw it on a grass mat or lily pad, wait and then hop it into the water. The number of bites will go way up.
A recent study in Lake Fork, Texas found that boats ...

Re: Tip of the day
Today's tip: when you find a nice spot but aren't sure if you could find it again, save it on your smartphone (assuming you don't have one of those fancy fish finders with GPS and memory). Smartphone GPS is accurate to about 15' and that will usually get you close enough, especially if you have a ...

Re: Lure making and modification over the years has taught me a lot
But again, this forum is for SD area fishermen and women per ADMIN. A lot of us in SD who are “idiots” for fishing realistic looking swimbaits per OP. People can hide and change their screen name, it doesn’t matter.
It's a shame you can't be polite to people who you don't agree with, even for ...

Bait casting reels are great for accuracy but do you wish you could cast further without backlashing? Some tips for making long casts where you can't just apply more thumb pressure or more anti backlash setting, works for conventional reels too:

Re: San Vicente Lake Record Redear 4.2 lbs Released
Those quagga mussels are mighty tasty to a redear. Redears are growing like crazy elsewhere too.

Re: SDFish member ranking
Maybe it should be based on the number of thanks not on the number of posts. Quality over quantity. Or a dual ranking system.

Re: Tip of the day
Don't overthink colors. Bass only have 2 type of cones (most humans have 3, a few have 4) and can only see red thru green (red-orange-yellow-chartreuse-green). A bass has a hard time distinguishing yellow from white or blue from black or very dark green. Spotties havent' been studied but I suspect ...

Re: Golden Bass
Bass have the ability to change their color to match the background, much like a chameleon. So bass caught in the weeds will have the classic green and black largemouth pattern and I have seen fish caught in the open water be light green and almost silvery.

Re: It's official
Algae die off from a severe algae bloom can suck up oxygen, doesn't have to be vegetation die off.
As far as Upper Otay, if any insecticides or herbicides got into the lake, some of those are highly toxic to fish too.
Upper O was great in its day for float tubers, wish they would restock it. It ...

Very nice series of tests but it would have been great if there were an Excel file with results for data nerds like me.

Re: Bay 6-5
You might have seen me then. Fished from a float tube, south of the bridge, got 22 spotties and 2 corvina. Best bait was a Missile 3.5” Shockwave on a standup weedless head worked slowly on the bottom. Slower than usual day. Usually I get smaller fish in South Bay this time of year.

It means weather is like a box of chocolates, never know what you're going to get.
Tom Hanks , said it best.
A 50yr weather prediction seems silly..
But a 2 month weather prediction is a gold mine. Citadel makes billions off of its better weather predictions.

Re: Used torn soft plastics
Mend-it works on PVC based plastics (traditional soft plastics), would not expect it to work on Zman since PVC and Zman melt together in a big mess when in contact. Be sure to the bottle upside down when done so it doesn't dry out as fast.
Superglue works on PVC too, not as flexible as Mend-it ...

Re: May Gray
In western Peru, La Nina and El Nino dominate the weather when it happens. The effect here is weaker. We had a classic cold, dry La Nina winter in 2021/2022 and late 2022. Then the jet stream moved south and we got hammered with rain while Seattle had a drier winter and spring. Weather is best ...

Re: Soft Plastics Colors and Combos
So are these colors really the favorite of fish or of fishermen? I think a lot of colors (and even lures) are selected on the basis of "I would eat that if I was a fish" (a form of anthropomorphism).

Re: Advice to beginners on hooking plastics
Skin hook is when the barb just goes in as far as the point. Flesh hook is past the barb. Skin hook is definitely better than flesh hook.

Re: Live Bait Rigs
For halibut, I would recommend a rig that gets the bait off the bottom more so they can see it from a longer distance, either a dropshot rig or a 3 way swivel rig. Dropshot for anchovies, 3 way swivel for mackerel and smelt. You could also use a dropper loop for the bait hook instead of a dropshot ...
