Surf City=Slab City?

Started the day by finding only 2 sand crabs, so I went with the old stand by.... Dried, frozen blood worms... I first tried Seal Beach for no bites on the SCs or BWs.. After wasting a couple of hours there, I made a run to Huntington Beach... Good choice... After a few misfires with 2 dinky BSP, I ...

Re: Where to throw LC tommorrow.

Guess we're all a little late to the party and you're probably on your way up as I type this. There's 50 miles of coast line between TP and DP, so I'd just find whatever is most convenient for you.

Halibut season is warming up and grunion are expected this weekend, so your LC might be the best bet ...

First legal Hali.

First legal hali from the surf. Caught down in San Diego on a white fluke drop shot. It was the only fish I caught and I was just getting ready to leave to try the bay instead of the surf.

Burnout Beans

These 2 small corbina ate the same soft shell on consecutive casts. Burnout separates Torrance Beach and Redondo Beach.

North County SD

Went fishing about five or six times over the past few weeks for my first time in years. Happy to say that there are plenty more fish biting these days than two years go, when I left off. I've only caught BSP and Walleye SP, but I'll take it. Each session has been yielding at least a fish every 20 ...

Double luck

Pretty good condition this afternoon. Low wind, low swell, low tide.
Used hi-lo rig, one hook on squid and one hook on shrimp to figure out what fish want to bite today.
Waded in, casted out, walked back, felt the hit before getting to shore. Was quite a pull to land.

NOC On Another Beautiful Day

Conditions were great with small surf, beautiful sky and clear water... I started out using dried blood worms for 3 dink BSP, but over all slow fishing... I met a couple of buddies down there, and they were doing about the same as me... Except for one of the guys that had scrounged some sand crabs ...

A new PB

I did not catch these often, and never caught this size. Not a giant but plenty decent.
A kid came by and wanted to watch it while I went for another cast. Sure. I came back 15 minute later and he was still watching it. Ok buddy, you can have it.
He was so happy.
I went to Costco and bought some ...

Month of April

April is always nice as the water warms up enough to go barefoot in the wash. This month saw mostly small perch and some good sized croaker biting, although some baby leopard sharks came out to play in north county.

Seaweed down, surfers up

Seaweed was forbidden for the last few weeks, at least for the spots I usually fish. I hauled many giant piles up, even broke my Uglystik Bigwater rod... The only upshot was that those sessions were fine workouts.

This weekend the seaweed was more accommodating. They were still there, but I can ...

Hermosa PB Corbina

I got to fish with my youngest son yesterday afternoon. We found some soft shells at the Hermosa/Manhattan border. After about 30 min I glanced over my shoulder to see him get bit in close. I didn't see it until he beached it... 22 inches! A quick photo, then released strong. My son was all smiles ...

6/1 session

Spent a few hours Saturday afternoon casting LC and swim baits. Salad was manageable. All I got was a short hali.

Pacific Beach 6/5

Mission Beach was full of red tide again so took a chance on finding a parking spot at PB & got lucky. Low surf inside & good conditions, a bonus.
Usual dinkers around & leader was getting short from cutting loose several hook swallowers. Contemplated packing it in but decided to put on a new 2 ...

Fishing with dad

My father will be 99 years old this Sept, the pier is about all he can handle anymore. None the less, the other day he hung a 21 1/2" grump. Quick pic and released, gonna take him out on the boat tomorrow. Didn't mean to cut his head off :D

6/8 - 6/9

Noticed that red tide cleared from Encinitas / Cardiff area. Tried my luck both saturday and sunday afternoon / evening. Saturday I got skunked, sunday I got a sand bass. Even with weedless set up, there was plenty of salad to deal with on both days.

A Calamity of Errors....

....with one nice fish.

That pretty much sums up my evening on the sand.

During the summer, we go to the beach as a family every Friday afternoon with a group of other families. It's mostly just hanging out, but I always bring a rod or two so I can toss a few casts when the opportunity presents ...

Spotfin on the fly

PXL_20240623_140617951.jpg
My first spotfin! Red krabbypatty fly at Blacks, 7:00AM, -1ft tide. Kelp was a nuisance and got worse as the tide came in. I did not see any corbina.

Picky corbina and hot perch summer

I went fishing several times over the past few weeks at several beaches in north county - ponto, beacons, grandview, tamarack, etc.

First thing I noticed is the perch bite is way stronger than usual at this time of year. I feel like it's usually at-most 2:1 at this time of year BSP to other species ...
