February 2025 Lower Owens Trip
Went fly fishing on the Lower Owens river just outside Bishop California last weekend. The weather was awesome and the fishing was great… caught some wild brown and rainbow trout up to 15” long using a euro nymphing technique. The hot fly was a size 14 light brown thread frenchy with a pink 3.5 mm ...

Re: Wild SD Trout- Report
Great video takes me back to my younger days when I hiked down below the BIG BEAR LAKE DAM and there were ponds I fished and caught some nice trout, too old, bad knees to do that anymore it was one of those you won’t forget no matter how bad my memory gets, THANKS

Re: Wild SD Trout- Report
This is one of the situations where you wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze, but interesting for sure.
I remember being bitten by the fly fishing bug, enough that I would spend every weekend scouting random blue lines, coming home with bumps, bruises, scratches, and wearing down shocks and ...

Re: SoCal Dry Fly Fishing
Very cool video and an epic looking place to fish. Small stream exploring and bushwhacking for wild trout is always an awesome adventure. Be careful...dry fly fishing can be a major addiction (note my member name). :)

Re: SoCal Dry Fly Fishing
I really can't justify buying most of my fishing gear (or other toys), but what the heck, we gotta have something to keep us out of mischief.mcquade outdoors wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 6:48 am a Tenkata rod would be perfect, I just haven't justified buying one for the 1-3 trips a year i might do.

Re: SoCal Dry Fly Fishing
Having some desiccant or a method of drying the wet dry flies was the first thing I realized I needed the first time dry fly fishing. My first cast, I was all excited, my 2nd cast, a little less so, and finally by my 4th, my Parachute Adams had become a Adams Streamer.

Re: SoCal Dry Fly Fishing
I use a floatant that comes in the same packaging a product called dry magic. It may be the same product but mine is written in japanese so I don't know. It's like a vaseline that you put a drop on the fly and squeeze it in and it basically waterproofs it and helps it float longer.

Re: SoCal Dry Fly Fishing
Frogs Fanny in my go to dry fly floatant. The container comes with a brush to push floatant into the fly, it blows all over but works wonders. Fish slime can make the fly tough to float, make sure to get the slime off of it. Shimizaki dry fly shaker is a good one but doesn’t last as long but it’s ...

Derp City...population: me
I love it when a plan comes together.
This one didn't. Fun, just not epic.
Tried to combine a long tide ride with trying out some different lures. Kicked back and forth a lot, to cast said lures into specific spots. So at the end of the day....I had no gas left to properly get after the spotties ...

Tidelands....a nice ride....
Great weather, tide and wind not bad, a bit of chop.
Had a full day.
There were three red skiffs, four kayaks and two float tubes pounding a certain dock...not much happening there and everyone left.
Except me...got a bite as I was leaving and hung around a while....and the USN security boat ...

Do fish even care?
Saturday I was using a sorta leftover goofed-up lure. Was supposed to be two tone green/chartreuse, but the green layer came out too thick and not opaque...hard to see the 3D eyes glaring through.

Modding molds to make underspins, tailspins...
Okay, my friend Gus gave me a bitchin Jackall tailspin. Casts a mile, catches fish. And once you find that guy in the Ukraine who makes knockoff molds cheap, you can build your own. But before my mold arrives in a few more weeks...took a shot at modifying the ultra minnow mold to make tailspins ...

Re: Flash freezing fish (tuna and escolar)
Once the temperature dropped below 30-35F I added few more pieces of dry ice and started putting the fish in
I kept monitoring the temperature so when it went above 30F I just added some more ice

North Gonzaga and Loreto
I'm going to be moving to New England this fall. With only a few remaining months in SD, I knew that the one thing I absolutely had to do was fish Baja proper. I went once to Gonzaga with a couple friends on a road trip, and two weeks later went with my dad to Loreto via plane. Both trips were great ...

La Ventana Dorado & Hurricane
Got back last week from a fly fishing trip to La Ventana. The dorado fishing was pretty good, but not spectacular. Sardinas were no where to be found, and the fish for the most part followed them. We ended up using ballyhoo, which worked to attract the fish, but not near as well as sardines. Still ...
