I found 4 nice soft shells this morning and converted all 4 to corbina.
It is amazing how the corbina at my local beaches can tell the difference between hard and soft shell crabs. I use straight 8lb mono, so they don't seem to be line shy. My fishing buddies and I joke that they are "crab snobs ...

5/12 session
Conditions were pretty nice so went for an afternoon session on Sunday. Salad was minimal so I tried soft plastics and luckycraft but there were no takers. Switched bait fishing with shrimp and got a short sand bass, a perch and bunch of leopard sharks.

Re: Pacific Beach Sand Crabs & Salad
Did a gray light minus tide session 10 days ago straight out from PB Drive. That area seems to always have a good inner trough & some good size holes but the kelp & grass were real bad that day, barely fishable & no sand crabs. Made a move south to Mission near Belmont Park. Much better conditions ...

North County SD. New species for me.
The surf has been pretty rough the past few days and chock-full of salad. I've been trying different spots in north county, with mixed success, so I decided to circle back to this year's honey hole, and it produced from the first cast. I landed my first ever black surfperch. Both of them put up a ...

A Calamity of Errors....
....with one nice fish.
That pretty much sums up my evening on the sand.
During the summer, we go to the beach as a family every Friday afternoon with a group of other families. It's mostly just hanging out, but I always bring a rod or two so I can toss a few casts when the opportunity presents ...

Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024
On Labor Day sunset, I caught a legal barracuda from the surf, 28 inches, on a t-rigged white fluke in the La Jolla area.
I caught a short one from the sand in June, but this was a big surprise.

Grunion run tonight 3/29/25
I’m gonna head out to OB tonight and try to catch the predicted grunion run. I’ve tried a handful of times when I lived in Santa Ynez but never had any luck, and I’ve never tried in SD. Since my 4 month skunk got washed last weekend, maybe tonight is the night

**UPDATE**
The grunion were there! Not huge #'s, but plenty to have some fun and see an amazing display of nature! Pretty big wave power, the big washups seemed to have the most fish coming in. Put about a dozen in a bucket just to observe, used a few for live bait later, but they kept getting ...

Bambluegilled
Another bluegill outing this morning. Decided to go with some old school gear (older than fiber glass)
Decided to fish bamboo (fine Tonkin cane) today. Vintage Orvis "99" 7' 6wt made in the 1960s. Though marked for a 6wt it casts a 4wt line nicely. Fun rods. Paired with a Scientific Anglers System ...

Creek Wade 6/13
Decided to wade a local creek, and was able to pick up several sunfish although the bass wouldn't cooperate. Was using an olive beadhead bird of prey from tfs that has worked well in the past for pretty much everything, although as of late it hasn't worked the same. My guess is the continued cold ...

BamBassGill, or is it BassGillBam at Murray
Another quick to Murray on foot this morning. Nice morning for fishing. Overcast and no to light breeze until quit about 0900.
Started fishing about 0630 and no bites until 0645 :)
Got a small bluegill on topwater which a heron boldly came up and tried to take from me as I was grabbing the leader ...

Mammoth Lakes fun!
If you like stripping streamers in shallow water, now's the time up here! I've picked up 42 fish in 2 days, ranging from 12" to 23". I'm fishing the flats in the back of Lake Mary, mostly stripping black leaches with a flashback hares ear trailer. 11 of the fish were between 20"-23" and caught in 2 ...

East Walker and Upper Owens river fun!
Fly Fished the Upper Owens river by Mammoth and the East Walker River outside of Bridgeport last weekend. I primarily used euro-style tight line nymphing with very specific tackle associated with that technique. For example, I have a 10ft , 3 weight echo shadow x rod that is very sensitive at the ...

South San Diego Bay for the last couple of months
Been hitting San Diego one to two days a week for the last couple of months. Mostly between Fiddler's Cove area and south end of the Coronado Cays and from east to west.
Fishing has generally been good. A few slower days where the fish ate plastic grubs much better than flies but most days about ...

Re: South San Diego Bay for the last couple of months
As the water cools down I will utilize slower retrieves more often. I use slow retrieves in the summer too but also faster retrieves. But the faster retrieves tend to be less productive during the colder periods. Still, I experiment to see what is working. But when the water is measuring 56º at the ...

Fished South San Diego Bay again this morning. Launched about 0630 and first cast around 0645. High tide around 0715

Fly fishing from Tidelands
Launched my kayak from tidelands this morning and fished around the bridge and various flats in the vicinity. Fairly slow morning but sunny and beautiful. Caught a few bay bass, a smelt and a nice sculpin at one of the Coronado bridge pylons which was surprising. I caught fish on flies I tied ...
