As Summer Fades, Fishing Will Start To Heat Up

Welp, summer has come to a close up on the high prairie and soon all the trout will start getting active for the winter. It definitely has been a slow summer, as we had a dry-ish winter up here, and a lot of the reservoirs had more water drained out of them than water flowing in. I caught a few ...

Re: First wild trout

Pretty sure the bottom one is a brook trout. Next one up looks like a cutthroat. I can't tell on the rest.

Re: First wild trout

The ones in the snow are brookies. The others appear to be rainbows, but could have some golden genes in them, depending on which stream you caught them in and how far up in elevation.

I’m glad you got to experience fly fishing. It’s my favorite type of fishing to do (hence my handle on this site ...

Re: First wild trout

Sounded like you had a good time up there. Surprised there's still so much snow pack, but we were at about 200% this year from the rains.

Eastern Sierra whitewater report

Many campground closed due to swampy conditions.
My jam is flicking spinners in little creeks. High, fast water limits presentation in most spots. Gonna hit parts of the San Joaquin tomorrow. Gonna have to be past the summit by 7 am to avoid the shuttle. The road to the postpile is open but the ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

Yes. They used to be loaded back in the day with big rainbows but I’m 99% sure they haven’t stocked them in many, many years. This was back in 80’s and 90’s. There could be some epic fishing in sweetwater “river”. You might be able to catch some bullhead cats in the deep pools still.

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

A few years back I saw some people pull out trout from Sweet Water River in the Green Valley area, so they're out there. Just need to find the right pool. Not sure how much water is running through it right now. I'm planning for some camping as Paso the week after next. If Green Valley is open I'll ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

Dang you're out camping everywhere. Any favorite day hikes out there? I hear a lot of recommendations for Green Valley falls.

Green Valley Falls area is nice since it is by running water. Stonewall Peak is nice too but stay away from the peak if it looks like a storm or your hair starts to rise ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

I was mountain biking at Cuyamaca this morning so I decided to stop by Green Valley Falls. There's plenty of water in the creek and air temperature was >90F. The ranger said that the river is not stocked and most years there is not much flow this time of year. So I doubt you will catch much if any ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

Unfortunately the sweetwater river doesn’t get its flow from cuyamaca or over flow. It’s all spring and run runoff up there. It would have to be stocked

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

There's always something to see around that area. Take a camera; nice pics from the top of Stonewall Peak (on a clear day you can see Mt. San Jacinto). And just parking at Green Valley Falls offers some good wildlife options.....this was in February a few years back...

6/13- Murray

Just a pic of my third cat I have caught while fishing for bass at Lake Murray. This one gobbled up a brush hog. It took about 20 seconds
as I was thinking it was a nice bass, but soon realized it was probably a cat. This was the smallest of the 3 and weighed 6.75lbs.

Elsinore Derby

Fished an Elsinore Derby on Sat. It is a 5 species tournament, lmb, wipers, catfish, carp and crappie. Conditions were horrible strong winds and freezing. My cousin brought his little boat out from San Diego. It was extremely difficult to fish, the wind was blowing us around like crazy. I couldn't ...

7/9 Whoever smelt it

Did an early morning session from 0630-1130; dock hopping Bayfront Park. Had a nice overcast day and slightly more wind than I prefer. There were absolutely no spotties to be found, but fortunately the day didn't end in a skunk. Two for the session—a needlefish (which I was a little surprised by ...

My daughter came back from Santa Barbara for the summer. We have been fishing together since before she could walk. She missed Father’s Day and asked if we could hit the bay as a late celebration.Duh!! We grabbed a skiff from

Mission bay 8/3

Haven't posted on here in a long time. Finally, I have the chance to start fishing again more than a few times a year. Was out on Mission Bay from 6am to about noon. Bite died at about 10am. Got a total of 28 unless you count the 9 lizardfish. A mixed bag 2 yellowfin croaker, 1 sculpin, 15 (2 legal ...
