I usually fish Murray on weekdays because it is conveniently located by my kid's school. Murray, however, is closed the second Tuesday of every month so I ventured up to El Capitan.
It was an absolutely beautiful day. I ended up catching 4 smaller bass and this bruiser. The small bass were hitting ...

Lake Dixon - Thursday's Observations from a Bass Guy
Observation:
#1. Skunked from shore.
#2. Water level is lowest I've seen in at least 15-years (subject to change any day or week).
#3. At least for now, there is some level of increased shore access.
#4. Viewing the lake bottom to about 10' from a pier, seems a bit early for my fellow bass folks ...

Murray is heating up.
The bite at Murray has really turned on as the bass move into pre-spawn feeding.
I caught 13 over the last 2 days. Most were in the 2-3 pound range. They are feeding on the he bottom. I caught them on ned rigs, jigs, and 7" dropshot worms. Keep your bait close to the bottom in 15 to 20 feet of ...

San V 2/15 Awesome day
Finally some shallow fish!!!
About 10min into my day my Spot Lock quit working on me so I called an audible and decided to just go shallow and run shorelines. Turned out to be the right move. Seems like these few warm days we’ve had pushed some fish shallow. Found quite a few shallow fish all ...

2/16 SD River: After the flooding
Got up this morning and went to a nice breakfast with Deb(bacon/eggs/toast...no crepes today McFish). Later, I found myself in my garage which basically means I started messing around with fishing gear to pass time. I picked up a few clones at Murray the other day and kept thinking about a bass I ...

San V 2/18 Bees, busters and Bassholes!
I know I’m going to sound like a grumpy old man here but please bear with me.
To the Basshole in the white Ranger with beige and black stripes. Just because I started in the same spot you wanted to doesn’t mean you continue to roll in on me until you, literally, cast across me! Get to the lake ...

San V 2/22 Better size today
Lots of boats out today, probably tomorrow as well, pre fishing for the Angler's Marine tournament on Saturday. Got there earlier than usual today and ended up at the end of the second line of boats. Haven’t seen more than 5 or 6 boats in line the last few weeks.
Being that far back, I was shocked ...

Re: C&R gone too far?
Here are von Bertalanffy Growth Curves of LMB from Sutherland using data collected in the early 1960's (LaFaunce et al 1964), most of the 1980's (Bottroff 1987) and in 2015 (OEHHA data 2016). The biggest variable from the early 1960's to now is the difference in exploitation (harvest) of LMB and how ...

Re: C&R gone too far?
2 factors at play in any body of water when talking about the size or growth rate of fish. first is how much bio-mass a place can hold, not just about volume of water but quality of the water, vegetation, structure, forage etc. the second is the number of fish in the system, that includes all fish ...

Awesome multi-species day 2/23/24
Had an awesome multi-species day BFS fishing at lake Murray. Ended up with 13 Bass and two Trout. I was throwing mini Ned rigs, and tiny jigs with TRD Crawz trailers. Most of the bass were in the 2 pound range with one over 3, and another close to 4 lbs. I have to admit, BFS has rapidly become my ...

Great job out there again and always fun to see and chat with you. Those small baits and BFS fishing are sure
playing off. It was funny as I told my buddy Curt in the other boat on how I have not caught a bass over that
structure near the point entering San Carlos arm for a while and then watched ...

I followed your lead and nailed this one plus 6 Clones on a 1/16 oz. Jighead and 4 inch Sluggo. 7 pounds 12 oz. Took me around the boat twice, jumped 4 hair raising times and had two drag screaming runs on six pound test.

Re: El Cap 2-24 Can’t Complain! With a PSA
Beautiful fish!
I can second your sunscreen advice. I’ve had several spots of skin cancer removed over the years so it’s sunscreen and gaiters for me. Wish like hell I could wear long sleeves all day but I get too damn hot.
Have a bullet sized dent in my head because of a spot that was removed ...

What, no sterie strips? 8 Cancer removals for me. All Basel and Squamous cell. Go ahead and wear the sunscreen, but it probably won't do any good.
That is a nice fish!!! Have not seen one like, myself, in way too long! This year!

Re: Awesome multi-species day 2/23/24
I set the internal brakes to the second mark and just fine tune the outer dial as needed depending on the weight I am throwing. I think that works for 95% of everything I have thrown. Also found that lob casting it better than flicking for me.

Re: El Cap 2-24 Can’t Complain! With a PSA
Brother and I were there in the dam arm for the first 4 hours of the day and the last two. Rangers let us in way early, we were down on the shore when it was still pitch dark. First hour of light was on fire, we got bit on plastics (no luck on reaction but I did lose a 110 sadly) and after that it ...
