Re: Redondo Beach

I'll 100% that ! Might be your lifetime best from the sand for a single sesh especially this time of year. Really nice & mucho congrats. Have to ask however about the surf conditions up your way & if as bad as SD today? The NW swell & wash machine surf conditions kept a lot of shore pounders off our ...

Re: How big do surf perch get?

the big "slabs" can get up to 14 - 15" range at So. Cal beaches. A few may push close to 16. PB for me in San Diego was 14"+. Suggest you check out Nick Heid's site, www.surffishingsocalsd.com and Bill Varney's www.fishthe surf.com. Both have excellent info on perch fishing So.Cal's beaches.

Re: Ocean beach fishing

This time of year, mostly perch, an occasional yellow fin croaker possible. You're going to have morning neep tides that week so it's a crap shoot as to how good (or bad) the fishing might be. Neeps can be good for halibut but tough to get from open beach and better chances if you find a nice hole ...

Re: 1st decent perch...

If you're into perch, might suggest Silver Strand if its not too far a drive for you. The perch guys in SD have been killing it there this year, more slabs reported than I can remember past few years. A buddy got a dozen or so over the weekend, four at 13" and a 15"+ model. I've seen the pics. Go ...

Re: First legal Hali.

Unless you find a hali hole in or near hard structure, that's the way it seems to go from open beaches. Nothing for hours of tossing & then, boom you get hit. Kudos for hanging in there and congrats on your reward.

Re: Hook size for surf C-rig

For me, it usually depends on what bait I'm using. I prefer the 4 mosquito or octopus for average size sand crabs but have gone down to a 6 on real small ones or up to 2 for larger crabs or for bloodworms, ghost shrimp & mussel. Baitholder 4's also work well for ghosties & bw's. Corbina can be ...

Re: North County SD

Perch fishing definitely much better this past winter/spring than previous couple years. The big 14-15" slabs will hit LC's so a nice by-catch when going for hali's.

Re: Pacific Beach Sand Crabs & Salad

Did a gray light minus tide session 10 days ago straight out from PB Drive. That area seems to always have a good inner trough & some good size holes but the kelp & grass were real bad that day, barely fishable & no sand crabs. Made a move south to Mission near Belmont Park. Much better conditions ...

Deja Vu to 2023

Hit the minus low this am at SMB & found a huge hole/trough. Alternated tossing an LC and a Daiwa SP for about 30-40 minutes but no takers. Conditions were good, low surf, no salad but no Sc's. No red tide that I could see. Some perch nibblers around but then a seal entered the picture and blew up ...

Re: Work sucks, butt….

Nice work on the hali. I've targeted them at times at Coronado but yet to get one. Occasionally, hit on some decent croaker & corbina there but not on sand crabs; usually blood worms or ghost shrimp. Never found any crabs at that beach, lots of clams though. Lots of small crabs & some too big, like ...

Mission Beach Conditions

In case anyone has thought of hitting MB, you might want reconsider. Just got back from what was going to be a mid afternoon - early evening sesh. Red tide all the way from Jetty up to PB + heavy salad. Lifeguard said it started creeping in yesterday; today was real bad. Shame, water was so clear ...

Pacific Beach 6/5

Mission Beach was full of red tide again so took a chance on finding a parking spot at PB & got lucky. Low surf inside & good conditions, a bonus.
Usual dinkers around & leader was getting short from cutting loose several hook swallowers. Contemplated packing it in but decided to put on a new 2 ...

Re: Mission Beach Conditions

Heard yesterday from a few folks that Carlsbad was real bad and Mission was "chocolate milk". Checked a few beach cams this afternoon - - Mission still looked chocolate, PB was worse . . dark green/brown. OB looked ok as did Coronado

Re: Picky corbina and hot perch summer

I tend to agree on the perch this year. so many around that its almost just luck if a bean or croaker get to your sand crab before they do. A lot of surf guys, including myself, are having the same experience trying to get the corbinas working the shallows to hit their presentation. As one member of ...

South Mission Corbina

Got out yesterday 14.jpg morning to see if my comment to @cajunjacket's "picky corbina" post would come to fruition. It was perfect conditions and finding a huge hole was the bonus. Picked off 3 during the last hour of the outgoing tide, 14", 16" and 18". Bite faded off during the low slack but ...
