Re: Pacific Beach 8/3
It feels so good to get back in the Surf zone. Beautiful mornings, knee deep in the water, have a way of making you almost forget that burning in your lower back. I have a heck of a climb in and out of my area, just because I’m too damn cheap to pay $15 to park on the beach. I figure that makes ...

Re: Cap the 4th
My buddy Ted fishes Frog and Toads often up at Clear Lake and he soaks them in Dr Juice. He drops a squirt into a sandwich bag and dips that thing in there all day. Says they hold on to it longer. I fish a different Topwater, but it is also soft. When they eat it, instead of a hard strike back, I ...

Re: 8/4-Mixing it up at Murray
I just glad you went fishing and nailed them on my Birthday. I did my 64 mile Birthday ride, it gets tougher every year. 1 pic from the halfway spot. I surf fished today with a large South Swell for two Corbina and a Yellowfin Croaker and 90 pounds of weeds. Weeds pull hard in a big swell. Lots of ...

Re: Burn Out?
Grab that Fly Gear out of storage and grab some Red Murchins and a few epoxy Flys and hit the Surf. It fishes much like a river after you understand the patterns, Corbina are worthy adversaries, as are Spotfin, Halibut, and Corvina. The Barred Perch keep it interesting and the scenery can be ...

Re: Fletcher Cove - Solana Beach
While Softshells do get bit more often, I think the egg laden ones catch bigger fish. Maybe because the smaller Fish can suck them down quickly. A lot depends on the Tides, on the beaches I fish the Females full of eggs are generally caught on the lower end of the tide and the dinky males are up on ...

Re: Fletcher Cove - Solana Beach
You can blend the mussels with pulled apart cotton balls, then wrap the soaked cotton balls onto your hook, it works great. Outside of left field bait - Snails. Regular Garden Snails work great both in the Surf and Bay Fishing. Who would of thunk it? It was the Japanese Trout Fishermen at Anaheim ...

Re: It's not Barrett 8/8
Comparing a Public Lake, and one with multiple Tournaments, to Barrett is going to get you the same answer every time. I fish Barrett type Lakes often. My closest got hit with a fish kill and Golden Algae this year, the Bass numbers dropped in half but it is still better than the local Public Lakes ...

Newport Harbor 8/9
Hit the Harbor in my Float tube on the smaller of the two Tides today. Got in the water at 7 am across the Bay from the Coast Guard Dock. It started off slow, I kicked against an almost non existent incoming Tide down to the Big Public dock and hit a school of medium grade Sand Bass landing 6 on six ...

Re: What size fish hooks to use for spotted bass and other things in the bays?
First off I’m a little biased when it comes to Spotted Sand Bass. They live their entire lives in a relatively polluted environment and seem to thrive. Probably one of the most willing fish to catch there is. While they can get fairly large most aren’t. It takes a long time for them to get 14 inches ...

Re: What size fish hooks to use for spotted bass and other things in the bays?
This doesn’t mean we can’t catch the hell out of them, pat them on the head, tell them good luck, and send them on their way. As far as McDonalds, just no. Basically, most commercial caught Fish, has sat in the Sun, on deck for too long then aged four or five days before you get it. Perhaps quick ...

Canyon 8/15
Another Trip to Canyon Lake. I have been fishing Newport Harbor quite a bit. Easy and close to home. Still I miss the Topwater Bite enough to again, get up at 3:30 am, on the Jump Lagoon by 5:30 am, first Bass, minutes later. All in all a better Topwater trip this time. I had 7 landed by the time ...

Re: New to the surf, Torrey Pines 8/17
They will come. I got Whitefish last year. They are normally fairly deep water fish associated with rocks. There nickname is Razorgilled Bottom Dorado. That sort of says it all. I caught about 12 that day.

Re: New to the surf, Torrey Pines 8/17
Crazy Halibut, I got my biggest Newport Striped Bass on a Sand Crab, sight fishing Corbina, it ran in and stole it! I about fell over, landed it on Six pound test. It took a couple amazing runs, I was with some buddies that day. “ There he goes again”….

Re: North County Halibut Advice
I catch most of my big Halibut in the Surf before the Sun comes out. When that gloom clears up the Big Halis tend to move onto a little deeper water. I also fish the morning after the Gruinion Runs. On the beach at 5am and done by 9-10am. I almost exclusively use 5 inch Pearl ZMan Streakz on 1/8 ...

Re: 8/21-Murray "Oh YEAH!"
I saw a website where they can make you taller by cutting a section of your femur and adding cadaver Bone. Perhaps they can do that to your arm so you can take full shots of those big Bass you are constantly harassing.

Re: Mission Beach 8/24
My Buddies’ line was getting progressively worse as we fished last week. Turns out he had a crack in the ceramic tip. It was shaving slivers of line as he was reeling in. Looked like Spider Webs. He had to turn the Rod sideways to reel in the rest of the trip. It cost $6.10 to replace at The Longfin ...
