Learning to fresh water fish for my grandson

All my life I've been a salt water guy, had multiple boats, normally around the 21' range and I'd go looking for tuna. Sold all of that including my gear many years ago, my back just couldn't handle the pounding any longer (3 compressed disks).

My grandson has spina bifida so has a hard time ...

El Capitan Bluegill 10-26-25

Fished at El Capitan in the kayak on Sunday in calm sunny Fall conditions. Bluegill!

The bass were crashing around on top here and there, until early afternoon. They were very picky about eating. Fun watching and following the packs of them hunting in open water on the electronics, and I had a few ...

Lake Jennings Bluegill

Saturday was full of raging rainstorms. Finally got a chance to go fishing Sunday. I wanted to try bluegill fishing after some trout fishing because I often run out of trout to catch. Right after Saturday's storm, catfish would be biting better. The panfish and bass were pretty lockjaw even on live ...

Keep Mikey in your thoughts

I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but I'm sure most of us are familiar with Mikey Rijavec, either from his sdfishandsips YT videos, or just running into him at the beaches or launches. Many of you may know he's been missing in Baja after sending out a mayday call from his Solo Skiff. Now, his ...

Re: Kayak appearal

I am not a kayaker but don't use cotton for any activity where you might get wet or even sweaty otherwise you will basically be wearing a giant, heavy, wet dish rag.

Wool and most synthetic fabrics dry fast, the thinner, the faster drying. Choose SPF50 to protect from the sun.

Re: Kayak appearal

If you are kayaking in the bay, it never gets that cold or hot there. When I have done some evening social kayaking in the bay, I would just wear nylon shorts, beach shoes, synthetic thin socks, a cycling jersey and packable waterproof windbreaker as a top. Never bought anything to wear specifically ...

Re: Kayak appearal

Found good deals on NRS paddle tops online, back when I was winter- wading in the surf to fish. The anorak style were the least expensive and worked well. But I have a 19 inch neck, so even the xxxl sizes didn't fit well. Just a caveat if you're a bigger guy...

Re: MONDAY kayaking

I'm not familiar with the days for every lake but if you search them, the san diego website should have their open days listed.

Re: Keel/underguard

You could be the first but rhino lining is starting to cover all kinds of things. They do the tops of rv’s now and include lining all the plastic housing on the top. Might be pretty awesome to have them do the bottom on your yak? I had some pretty deep wounds in my hull from beaching it on shore ...

Re: Keel/underguard

You can buy some thermoform plastic called Kydex and glue it to the bottom areas you want to protect. There are quite a few guys that demonstrate the process they used on YouTube.

Re: Keel/underguard

I did originally started with a couple strips of black gorilla tape, but the cement ramps and fishing often pretty much tore into it, so I just bought a Berley Pro keel guard for my PA 12 and so far it’s been great.

Re: Lowrance local maps

My Lowrance unit uses a micro sd card from Garmin Navionics and I just uploaded west coast maps from their website. It includes lakes. I had to do it twice before it worked in my unit, not sure why?

Re: Lowrance local maps

This is what I bought for my Raymarine, although I didn't know Garmin owns Navionics now;

There is also this if you're interested in a more in depth layout of lakes

Re: Lowrance local maps

I downloaded it so I can have a copy and then transferred it to an SD card. I wanted a larger sd so I could save more info on it

Re: Lowrance local maps

You can buy last years maps on EBay. They come as a chip, you just plug it in on mine.
