got this in an email from ca dfw today:
"The NEW grunion season is upon us and anglers should familiarize themselves with season updates in the California Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations booklet. Due to recent population declines with the species, June was added to the no-take closure (now April 1 to June 30) and July 1 marked the new opener. There is a new bag and possession limit of 30 grunion per person. Remember only your hands can be used to capture grunion, no equipment or nets and no holes or pits can be dug to aid in capturing them. Check the location of marine protected areas and their associated regulations before heading out. A valid California sport fishing license (and an Ocean Enhancement Validation south of Pt. Arguello, Santa Barbara County) is required if you are 16 years or older, even if you plan to release the fish. Learn more with this CDFW blog post and the California Grunion Enhanced Status Report."
