Professional spinning reel maintenance?

Post by fiiishtaco »

Can someone recommend a shop that does good work on spinning reels? I'd send it to Shimano but it's too old and not on the list of models they service anymore. I took it apart to clean it and can't figure the right config for the washers on the main gear. Took it apart and put back together many times, but it's still geary.

Those washers are just shims so if it’s “Geary” remove one from one side and add it to the other to increase the tooth to tooth clearance. It’s also possible if you have too much clearance, it could make it “Geary” also. Not sure on any shops for the reel. Shimano parts especially in older reels are basically obsolete since the tsunami. I’ve had a few reels that were scrapped due to zero parts, even new old stock. Good luck

yeah i've swapped the shims around a bunch, but cant get it right. i would just throw it on the shelf and get a newer reel, but it has a little sentimental value. it was so perfectly smooth up until i ruined it. oh well.

Maybe a bearing isn’t fully seated or a shim is between the bearing and the side plate or isn’t. Totally understand. I know the schematics don’t always show the shim stack because the can vary. Do you have the schematic? I know there is a reel guy at Dana landing. You can drop it at east county bait and tackle also. Maybe hit up roncador on here too

surprisingly i did find a schematic online, but unsurprisingly, not a washer/shim listed anywhere. i'm never cleaning a shimano spinning reel myself ever again. never had this problem with penn spinning reels.
