My Murray.......

Post by Mcfish »

I know..everybody thinks Murray belongs to Vinny, but I'm here to reclaim it! Once I heard that Vinny was going to fish the River today, I saw my chance to take it back! I first fished the lake in 1962, so I've got some history! I got to the lake at first light, hoping to see some surface action, but instead found quiet glassy conditions. I spent the first hour trying to get something to come up, but no such luck! I brought out my dropshot and t-rig and hit my reliable spots. After an hour of probing everything from 2' to 20', I had one small fish to show for it. Just when I thought it was going to be a tough day, I noticed a commotion out in the middle of the lake...the busters came to play! I spent the next hour and a half chasing breaking fish and putting 12 in the boat! What they lacked in size, they made up for in attitude. By 10:30, topwater play time was over and I went back to the dropshot and hit some more of my spots. After losing a couple fish in the thick grass, I finally put another fish in the boat and called it a day at 12:30. I was surprised not to see Vinny in the parking lot with his binoculars checking out my secret spots! It turned out to be a fun day, but would of been a struggle without the busters. It's definitely a strange year on the City lakes..let's hope next year they return to their normal patterns!

Nice job out there @McFish. Got to hand it to you to nail so many bass, as the bass are pretty finicky as far as the worm bite and glad you found some top water action with bass that wanted to play. When they do come up, it can be exciting. What is strange is often the bass don't come up till after 9:30 or 10. Recently there was a flurry of small bass busting right before noon. Crazy!
In the last few months, I have actually been pretty disappointed with the worm bite so I just search for busters out towards the middle chasing shad. I do not know what happened as normally a wacky rigid senko worked in the grassy areas would almost always put a number of bass in the boat. Anyway, thanks for sharing your visit to Lake Murray and fish report with us. You are always welcome to visit. And thanks for sharing your bait also.....
I better look in the garage and bring a few packs of 3" sluggos for my next trip there.
Tight lines always buddy. :-)

Wow, that's a really good session at Murray @Mcfish Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping they'll be busting at San V this Monday after the storms we're supposed to get on Saturday and Sunday morning. Hope to see you out at San V on Monday(s).

Nice job!! That 3 inch Sluggo rig was the go to on breakers back in the day at San V before the new dam. 4 lb test on a 10 foot noodle rod. We used to call it tuna style bass fishing because the fights were so long.

Good stuff and thanks for sharing!

Happy Friday to All=)

I'm thinkin we started throwing baby sluggos at San V maybe 25-30 years ago! I threw them with a 8 1/2' foot rod and 4lb-6lb test! I now throw them with braid and 8' of 8lb Pline fluorocarbon leader. I get more distance with the braid and it keeps the bait 4"under the surface where I want it! I have quite a few tiny baits I throw now, including zoom baby flukes and even a mini Robo shad. Throwing those baits all these years takes it toll on your elbow and shoulder!

Good to know. I do remember the sluggos puddling on the surface a bit. Super fun style of fishing!

Many years ago we were catching topwater bass in Harvey Arm at Otay on Sammys and Gunfish and we saw a guy catching bass after
bass. He was actually catching more bass than us and 4 other boats and we just had to go talk to him. He was using 3" Sluggos on a
long 10-12ft spinning rod so he could whip them out there because they were really light small. I immediately bought some the next
day and had fun for a few years using them. I do remember catching a 5.25lb bass at Murray on a 3" one and I later liked the 4" ones
as they were just a little easier to throw. Like many lures and baits in the past, they ended up in the back of a cabinet in the garage
waiting hit the water again. :-)

I use to throw 3 inch sluggos for post spawn bass on the east coast. Biggest one was 8 pounds. If I can't catch a fish around here, I pull out my ultralight and use it for a skunkbuster haha.

It's a great technique, and super fun on 4lb test. I got an 8lb in the Kimble Arm back around 99 or 2000. So much fun!!!
