Charger fans?
Still have years and years of memories of the San Diego Chargers. My father used to take me to games when they played at Balboa Stadium and then later to San Diego Stadium(later to be named Jack Murphy stadium and lastly Qualcomm stadium). Anyway....after 23 years of having season tickets at the 40 yard line in Plaza, it was so sad when they left San Diego(thank you Dean Spanos). Not happy that they were in LA, but originally still watched them mostly due to the fact that Rivers and some others were still playing of them. Now years later, I still find myself rooting them on as the games are pretty exciting with Justin Herbert, Allen, Eckler, etc. Born and lived in San Diego all my life and normally root against any team that plays in LA, but still somehow I am a Charger fan.
Anyway....my question to you guys on SDFish, are there still any Charger fans out there?

Re: Charger fans?
LA to me just is always been a rival I guess. Especially the Dodgers vs the Padres. There are many rivalries out there like the Red Sox vs Yankees, Green Bay vs the Bears, Lakers vs Celtics, Michigan vs Ohio State, Rangers vs Islanders, etc etc. LA has always got the props in sports(maybe just jealous of all the championships they have) while San Diego always somehow falls short. For years we were just that sleepy little town near the border where our teams played...ha ha Things have got much better and I guess that San Diego vs LA rivalry formed in my head over the years so I found myself not too sad when teams in LA lose. Anyway..no hate...just the way I feel.Midnightpass wrote: Mon Aug 21, 2023 8:59 amVinny.... Why all the hate for LA?.. ... Yea, I like the Chargers, but I'm more of a Ram fan... Like you, I'm kind of a homer... The Chargers have a really exciting team, and what's not to like about Herbert??

He is pretty darn good and played injured last year. The guy can scramble and has quite a passing arm. Can't wait till the season starts.

Yessir! Although not as die hard as I once was. I do remember that 1994 AFC championship win over the Steelers. All week long analyst were already matching up the Steelers vs 49ers in the Super Bowl. I remember going to the stadium to celebrate the win with the Chargers as they arrived back in San Diego.
October of 2022 was a bit nostalgic for me with the Padres winning. It's amazing how a sports team can bring people together. It didn't matter if you are rich or poor. White or black. Or who you voted for. When you saw someone also wearing Chargers/Padres gear, you gave the nod like "hell yeah"

Re: Charger fans?
I was a pretty serious Charger fan most of my life and a little less serious now that they are no longer in San Diego. When you mentioned the 1994 AFC championship win over the Steelers...it brought back great memories. I was over my parents house watching the game with my father. It was so exciting and then you knew the unenviable was going to happen as the Steelers drove down the field to most likely shut out any hopes the Chargers would win, Then that play where it was 4th down and goal and Dennis Gibson knocked the ball away from the receiver. I never jumped so high and ran around the living room screaming with joy and then hugging my father as we both could not believe what just happened. One of the greatest sports memories I shared with my father. Then , like yourself...there I was at the stadium celebrating the Chargers return.La Mesan wrote: Sun Aug 27, 2023 8:37 pm Yessir! The Padres last year were amazing and beating the dodgers was the icing on the cake. Can't forget when they beat the Cubs in 1984, the city was ecstatic. San Diego Soccers had some amazing years also.
Thanks for your comment...as it was right on!

Sports can unite a city and even a country sometimes.
