SD Bay July 1&2

Post by Nick Arevalo »

My dad and I fished around SD Bay on Saturday and Sunday. The bite was good early on Saturday, but kind of died once the big tide swing started in the evening. I hooked into 2 batrays, one was about 20lbs, the other was somewhere near 100. I only hooked them on 12lb leader, so the ~100lber broke off after I got a good look at it. 20lber I landed, but didn't get a picture. My dad also lost an angel shark after the line touched a rock and broke :(

Ended with:
2 batrays (1 broke off)
1 angel shark (broke off)
3 short halibut
A dozen or so spotties
A few Mackerel
1 Jack mackerel
1 queenfish
1 midshipman
1 barracuda
1 vina

On Sunday, the bite was slow earlier in the day and picked up in the evening. We got into a little halibut bite later in the day and caught 5 shorts within 30 minutes. Well, maybe 4 shorts depending on who you ask because one of the halibut was barely touching 22". We released it because DFW was around checking licenses, and we didn't want to risk it. I've never seen DFW hop off of a boat onto the rocks to check for licenses before. Not sure why they chose to use a boat instead of a truck, lol.

Ended with:
~9 short halibut (largest = 21" & ~22")
A dozen or so spotties
Lots of short bites

Thanks, and yep, nice to see them around! I heard they cited 10+ people at the Harbor Island park for no licenses and poaching short spotties.
