Barrett Report 5/13/26

Post by Early release »

Hi All,

Couple other posts on Wednesday events, but here's some more information. Got on the water around 0500, slight wind from the north. Air temp was chilly but water was 69F. Like Chuck said, we headed over to Hauser. I started working some of the rocks with topwater and as stated, not a lot of takers, which is odd since the water is so warm. Minnow jigs counted off the bottom worked for me. I'd cast out, count it down to impact, reel in and clean and then the next cast was some number of seconds off the impact cast. That worked pretty well. Jerkbait was not as successful as it usually is. I tried 3 different ones, 110, X-nanahan, and #5 Rapala. Forget a crankbait, unless you are in the moss harvesting business, if so, that's the lure. Also no major success on plastics for me, but that's my weakest method, so we can assume I didn't give it the best effort.

It got a cold wind around 0730 until maybe 0900ish. Then the sun came out and it was a beautiful day. The moss is really growing and the water is quite green. It may be affecting the bite a bit.
Catching them in the dark is fun

Look at the color of the water. Not the fun size fish. :)

Thanks Dave! I like that impact method for jigging minnows. More vertical or have some angle in those retrieves?

Hey John,

I basically tried to keep it in the same plane above the bottom, Most of the hits were shortly after the lure started moving.

What do you mean by "minnow jigs"? Which brand and size, for both the body and jig head?

You say that you had no success with plastics but I think of a minnow jig as being a plastic minnow on a jig head. Or do you mean something different?

Hi, I use Flash J fish arrows with small jig head I guess around 1/16oz or 2g. They are plastics, I just don't think of them like worms, lizards and all the others like that, you got me there.
