Successfully dragged myself out of bed nice and early this morning to make it down to Cap a few minutes before the gate opened. Had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with @Early release while unloading at the ramp. With stories of the shad spawn spreading, I had the full array of baits ready to go and got on the water just after 6 am. I went up the dam arm, saw some pockets of foam on the shore, and marked lots of bait balls, but didn’t see any shad getting blown up. Unfortunately I couldn’t quite take advantage of the early bite. I got a few bites and 2 fish on an underspin & spinnerbait, but I was stuck between a (too) heavy spinnerbait & (too) light underspin. I found some action, but really should’ve made some adjustments to capitalize on the early bite.
I eventually decided to fish to my strengths, tied on a Neko rig, and started to feel completely dialed in. See rock, pitch to rock, get bit, rinse repeat. It’s not the most exciting or impressive thing, but pitching that light worm on a spinning rod into the perfect hole between 3 rocks and getting bit shortly after the fall can be a thing of beauty. Next time around, my ML spinning rod will start out with a Neko tied on haha.
I was stuck on 9 fish landed mostly all between 2-2.5#’s , and was hoping to keep the Neko bite rolling, but spent the last few hours fishless. All in all, another day of learning out on the water, and I’ll be looking forward to some Barrett trips next month!

That middle hour and a half was super fun, I just wasn’t ready to lose the bite so quickly! Haha. But I think I’m still right under 100 lifetime largemouth at this point, so I definitely can’t take days like that for granted!

Re: Cap 4/28
Good to see you out there and chat. That was a nice fish you had as I was going by. Seemed like the bite was a little slow yesterday. I also didn't see a lot of shore activity. I'm wondering if the feeding frenzy on the weekend had them all taking it easy. See you next month at Barrett!
