Surf sheephead tips

Post by mpa_slayer »

I'm looking for some advice from people with experience surf fishing for sheephead. I targeted them a few times last year but only caught one. I just want some basic info and tips (tide, time of day, waves, bait, rigging, how to find them, etc.) thanks!

First, congratulations on catching your sheep. It's not an easy catch from the surf.
They live in rocks, as you probably know already. I usually go heavy in the rocks. 40-60 lb main line, 100 lb abrasion leader, 4-6 oz sinker, etc. You can also light line in the rocks, and can catch sheep with that. I just prefer heavy.
I use shrimp for bait.
Again, it is not sure catch. Keep trying and you will get some. I caught sheep from most rocky shorelines here. The only exception is TP.
Good luck!
