Re: Lake Poway?
I went to Lake Poway 3 times with a friend that had caught 2 fish in the teens throwing big glidebaits before the covid thing. I never caught one but what I saw was unbelievable. The water was crystal clear and from the vantage point of the higher meandering trail you could see the beds with more ...

12x3 private island
Spent the weekend on my gayak. Covering serious miles ither n' yon. Trying for halis and veens mostly. Not too much success there. Lost a big one this morning in some rich person's backyard.
Spotties bit constantly on cranks, chatters, and worms.
Heard a noise hit my kayak and then splash while ...

Re: Tidelands Park, slow, very slow
It is odd how at times such a catchy body of water just shuts off. And it’s not like the fish went anywhere. Every day is a puzzle!

Mission bay 8/10
This Sunday was rougher than the last. Spent a good bit of time working some new baits with little to no luck. 20 fish total a mixed bag of spotties and calicos. Few of the spotties being legal or just shy of it. Most were caught on the incoming tide in the morning. Bite shut down for me around 9 ...

Straight braid or leader for lucky crafts/jerkbaits
I'm using a Phenix trifecta light 10' for throwing jerkbaits in the surf, reel is loaded up with 30lb braid and I usually use 12-20lb leader, enough to have my finger on that instead of braid when casting. I keep having a problem with break offs near my knot though. My knot doesn't fail, rather my ...

Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024
On Labor Day sunset, I caught a legal barracuda from the surf, 28 inches, on a t-rigged white fluke in the La Jolla area.
I caught a short one from the sand in June, but this was a big surprise.

Pacific Beach Wednesday Oct 2
Fished the surf south of Crystal pier this morning for maybe a couple hours. Water still cold, my app says 64 and that seems about right. Grass and various salad was thick and would tie my leader up within 5-10 minutes of casting. One bite, a 15 inch YFC.

Re: North County trips.
Would any lurker or participant on this thread like to comment on kastmasters and crocodiles in the surf?
First, please, do you go with a single hook? A longer one or standard inline if so?
When to throw them, I saw and was surprised it is a tool for catching yellowfin croaker, not astonished for ...

Re: North County trips.
Going surf fishing this afternoon. Not much strategy, but mostly sand crabs and shrimp, either in the troughs or shrimp flung out on the reefs.
Butch has me hoping it will be a corbina day for me, or my son. 20 inches or better, please!
A full moon and rush hour traffic might be a temptation to ...

Torrey Pines skunk city
I've been getting skunked at Torrey Pines. I've been going at night, I think the problem is the tide. The high tide is happening later and later, but I tried a few different nights. At high tide, an hour after high tide, 2 hours after high tide. Then an hour before high tide. No fish. Ok, I did ...
