Mission Beach 12/31 - New species for me :)
I had to check out the almost non-existent surf this morning at Mission Beach!! Truly a spectacle to see the ocean so calm, even at the highest tide of almost 7 feet. It was eerily silent at 6:30 this morning with only the occasional mini-breaker at the shore. Even the pelicans were in close, and a ...

Mission Beach 1/2 (peak low tide)
Not sure if “peak” is the right term, but my son and I hit up Mission Beach to try fishing the extreme low tide of this weekends King tides.
We tripped over some really large clams that were getting exposed in the water, but the fishing was about as I’d normally expect; handful of perch of various ...

Re: Mission Beach 1/2 (peak low tide)
Sounds like the consensus is out on Mission Beach. It’s just stays flat most of the time.
With that said, what beaches within the SD area are best to fish? Of course, excluding the MLPA beaches and areas.
Do some homework on the MPLA system as far as regs , there are a number of the areas that ...

Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026
Hi all!
2025 was the my first year of surf fishing after many, many years of fishing freshwater around San Diego. It all started on a camping trip at South Carlsbad State Beach before Memorial Day Weekend. I'd joked that I was just going to eat what I caught, and brought a couple small poles and ...

Re: Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026
I really like this post. I wanted to get my son into fishing and I knew that taking him to freshwater would most likely result in skunk unless use bait. I don't like bait because of the smell, the cost, and the guy hooked fish. I also learned to spin fish in the surf this year. My son caught many ...

Re: Mission Beach 1/2 (peak low tide)
You guys all have a lot more experience fishing SD beaches than I do... Pacific Beach/Mission Beach, Carlsbad and San Onofre are about it for me... I do want to fish south Camp Pendelton, but have only fished the north end... In other words I can't help with locations or conditions, but enjoy the ...

Great post. Just moved here last spring. Probably got to fish the surf in May or June. This site… the members have been so awesome to help this newbie. I thought it was going to be easy after my 1st or 2nd trip out I caught a legal hali. No more legal since. Caught only 2 more hali after that ...

Re: Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026
Fish the inlets(River mouths) at dead low or high Tide for those elusive Halibut. Use at least a 5 inch white Swimbait to discourage the “Potato Chips”. It’s all about the Tide and the bite window is short most of the time, sometimes it never slows down.

Great Post! They only thing I can add is "time on the water". Nothing beats time on the water for learning by trial and error. Plus, when you have bad days that means (from a probability prospective) that you'll have just that many good days to come! Thanks for spreading the passion!

Mission Beach 1/10
Oops, meant to post this a bit earlier.
Nice conditions with the outgoing tide this morning at Mission Beach from 6:30 until about 9:30. Light current, smallish waves, calm tide and almost no kelp/grass. The bite died off hard around 8:30 but I had a pit stop to make on the way home so I spent an ...

Re: North County trips.
Had the same experience with a good size one pass right in front of my feet a couple years back at Mission Beach. That same morning I was watching a guy walking the surf break while spear fishing. Made a couple of passes then saw him get one followed by another, 2 large sfc's. Tells me where they ...

Mission Beach 1/11
I had a small window this morning before some soccer games so I headed back to the beach. Still cold, obviously, but it was an otherwise beautiful sunny morning. Calm surf, calm currents, clean waters, and an active perch bite. Tiny coquina clams were popping up everywhere under my feet, which ...

Swimming or Floating is the catch . Have seen multiple citations given for standing and spearing Corbina at TP State Beach . The guys had said " we do it all the time " and the officer said they were lucky , he wouldn't confiscate gear. He did however confiscate the fish the people had . I have done ...

Hi all,
I’ve been a steady lurker for quite some time since peak beach season ended last year, so it’s great to see this surf fishing content here and in other threads. Not much fishing is going on for me. My only report would be the several-day trip near San Quentin Baja in November, and I caught ...

Mission Beach 1/17
I started the holiday weekend with a sunrise session at Mission Beach with the incoming tide, from about 6:30-9:30.
I caught one perch early on but spent the first hour or or so fighting large clumps of grass/kelp. I was worried for a bit that the morning was going to get cut short because of this ...
