Mission Beach 12/31 - New species for me :)

I had to check out the almost non-existent surf this morning at Mission Beach!! Truly a spectacle to see the ocean so calm, even at the highest tide of almost 7 feet. It was eerily silent at 6:30 this morning with only the occasional mini-breaker at the shore. Even the pelicans were in close, and a ...

Mission Beach 1/2 (peak low tide)

Not sure if “peak” is the right term, but my son and I hit up Mission Beach to try fishing the extreme low tide of this weekends King tides.

We tripped over some really large clams that were getting exposed in the water, but the fishing was about as I’d normally expect; handful of perch of various ...

Re: Mission Beach 1/2 (peak low tide)

Sounds like the consensus is out on Mission Beach. It’s just stays flat most of the time.

With that said, what beaches within the SD area are best to fish? Of course, excluding the MLPA beaches and areas.

Do some homework on the MPLA system as far as regs , there are a number of the areas that ...

Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026

Hi all!

2025 was the my first year of surf fishing after many, many years of fishing freshwater around San Diego. It all started on a camping trip at South Carlsbad State Beach before Memorial Day Weekend. I'd joked that I was just going to eat what I caught, and brought a couple small poles and ...

Re: Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026

I really like this post. I wanted to get my son into fishing and I knew that taking him to freshwater would most likely result in skunk unless use bait. I don't like bait because of the smell, the cost, and the guy hooked fish. I also learned to spin fish in the surf this year. My son caught many ...

Re: Mission Beach 1/2 (peak low tide)

You guys all have a lot more experience fishing SD beaches than I do... Pacific Beach/Mission Beach, Carlsbad and San Onofre are about it for me... I do want to fish south Camp Pendelton, but have only fished the north end... In other words I can't help with locations or conditions, but enjoy the ...

Re: Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026

Great post. Just moved here last spring. Probably got to fish the surf in May or June. This site… the members have been so awesome to help this newbie. I thought it was going to be easy after my 1st or 2nd trip out I caught a legal hali. No more legal since. Caught only 2 more hali after that ...

Re: Lessons Learn from 2025; Goals for 2026

Fish the inlets(River mouths) at dead low or high Tide for those elusive Halibut. Use at least a 5 inch white Swimbait to discourage the “Potato Chips”. It’s all about the Tide and the bite window is short most of the time, sometimes it never slows down.

Mammoth Lakes fun!

If you like stripping streamers in shallow water, now's the time up here! I've picked up 42 fish in 2 days, ranging from 12" to 23". I'm fishing the flats in the back of Lake Mary, mostly stripping black leaches with a flashback hares ear trailer. 11 of the fish were between 20"-23" and caught in 2 ...

Re: Fly Fishing Coronado Surf Again

Hit the surf with the fly rod again in Coronado last weekend , got 5 perch including this tank! Used red surf flies like the crabby patty pattern which was super fun. The water seemed to have some smell too it from the natural Tijuana spring water but I had waders so I was good i hope.

Henshaw has been great.

The past two weekends I've been going out with Tubefly . I've been exclusively sight fishing for Carp, but Bill doesn't have the patience and vicinity-fishes with an indicator. I got four carp last week and six yesterday, and lost a whole bunch more. But more importantly, I had the most shots on ...

Re: Wild SD Trout- Report

Looks like a lot of work to get there.

Didn't see any poison oak but it's winter time too. I have been along a few streams (while hiking or biking) that are supposed to have wild trout and they have lots of poison oak.

I rolled in poison oak as a kid and ever sense haven't been too bothered ...

Paddleboard Tarpon Fishing: Report

Might as well get a paddleboard report in here even if its not from San Diego!

Re: Paddleboard Tarpon Fishing: Report

A circle hook with a split ring attaching it to the eye of the jighead? Interesting, that tarpon fishing is still a bucket list for me (as for most other anglers) but it seems so frustrating to expect to lose so many fish that even hooking one "counts" more than hooking and losing just about any ...
