Santee Lakes Bluegill Blossoming

Lately I have been visiting Santee Lakes and catching bass, but also watching the newly hatched bluegill grow from one inch to more than three inches. They always seem to be feeding on heavy concentrations of freshwater plankton and also on hatching bugs in the heat of the day. They are usually ...

Fat Bluegill, San Vicente ... again? May 21

It's officially a pattern at this point! :D

Really fun panfishing again today and upped gear to 6 lb. braid with 6 lb. leader, found the fish in the same areas. Targeting around 15 to 18 feet deep on nightcrawlers at the outer edge of the brushlines, similar to Friday's catch but added a fat 2.2 ...

Now I Believe It - San Vicente Jun 12th

Last week after a year of forced hiatus, I finally got out fishing and had a good day. But it only gets better, because this week I got to share it with and old friend. Like last week, it was a short day of about 3 1/2 hours. I always feel pressure to catch some fish when someone goes with me, but ...

Re: What panfish can be found in San Diego?

Color won’t matter for the most part. It’s the profile that counts.

Otay before Hillary

The kids have been ready for another trip since we did so well @ Hodges a couple of months ago. I've been hearing the bluegill bite was on @ Otay so I thought we would give it another try. I say another try as I've taken the kids here a few times and we never seem to have a good day. My son labeled ...

Harrassed by VinnyBass' alter ego at Murray?

I went to Murray for a couple of hours this morning to chase bluegill.

The session started off with a weird event.

A few minutes after starting casting I hooked a bluegill about 6 inches long on a popper. As I was bringing it in and grabbing the leader with my right hand there was a crash behind ...

Re: War mouth sunfish

Naw, blackcloud. Their bodies were more like bluegill than greenies....and they had short rounded pectoral fins like a a green sunfish, not the longer, pointed fins like bluegill or tilapia.
It was in the pool where where I crossed that one time, and found a kingsnake eating a ratter..does that ...

Last day of 2023...EPIC

My last day of fishing for 2023 was awesome. Landed 10 huge Bluegills in a couple of hours. I was pulling a 2" sinking twitch bait and for a while-getting bit on every cast!

Giant Tilapia

Got this guy as bycatch during a recent trip with a crank bait. 7lbs on the boga probably the biggest I'll ever catch. Thought it would be cool to share.

Clear Lake Crappie Action...

The Crappie Mecca!

Wish it was me...

Since I have nothing to report on the subject thought I'd share this really cool video of "Fishing Addict" out killing the 2 pound slabs. I watch a lot of his videos and he has that lake and live scope dialed in. He didn't have his scale. A few might had ...

Re: Giant Tilapia

Lower Colorado River has some huge Tilapia in it. Their beds look like moon craters! I’ve caught a couple in the 4-5lb range over the years but there are MUCH bigger ones in there.

Re: First day out and over 70 fish in 4 hours

Yeah, you’re absolutely right, lures that resemble natural forage don’t work at all. I’ve tried rattle traps- nothing! Top water frogs- nothing. Jerk baits- NOTHING! You know, I’ve even dabbled in throwing those realistic trout lures….what a waster of time! People who buy those realistic looking ...

Re: First day out and over 70 fish in 4 hours

Thanks, I’ve learned so much, I’m going to try and go out and catch my first hawg! I don’t know what I’ve been thinking all this time that a natural looking lure would catch something. Thanks for all these local San Diego techniques! Now I’m going to go make my friend feel bad and out fish him!!!!

Re: First day out and over 70 fish in 4 hours

Spoon minnow aka senkosam is the greatest angler of all time. He’s not scared to let us all know it and to teach us how we do it all wrong. He’s on his way to the fishing hall of fame with guys like Bill Murphy. I hope one day I can catch fish like him. Apparently I’ve had it all wrong all these ...

Re: First day out and over 70 fish in 4 hours

“ No doubt I could (and have) caught fish on many lures sold, but not as many on many lures sold. It's not about the source of the lure but about specific lure actions that can always be counted on. Even with crankbaits of a similar body shape and bill type, variations in action make or break a ...
