Re: I’m not an expert.
With hogs like those, you don't need light action gear and finesse lures! Any fish over a foot long not only strike bigger soft plastics and some crankbaits, but put a serious bend in your medium action rod. Granted, there are time when going lighter and smaller catch the most fish of all sizes ...

Re: I’m not an expert.
Why are you throwing a rat at Barrett then? You are definitely matching the hatch. I have seen plenty of rats swimming at places like Barrett, Loveland, river bottoms. Had a fish cough a rat up at Loveland too. A heavily salted flylined “poop” bait may not resemble anything under a microscope but a ...

Re: I’m not an expert.
If you truly want to test your theory about not matching the hatch, why don’t you put something like a shirt button on a hook and go fish that all day. Most of not all lures mimic something in nature. Even your best friends creations. Most likely bugs. That fall into the water.

Re: I’m not an expert.
Matching the hatch or not I don’t care as long as it getting bite, cast great and look good to me. I’ll buy that LOL. I love when it matching my gears though.

Re: Lake Havasu Video
During a tourney out there, I hook into what I thought was a nice smallmouth, since I was throwing a 1/4 ounce jig. Turns out it was a 2 pound redear, the size of a dinner plate.
Havasu is a fun fishery, for whatever you're into. I wish I lived closer, although a 5 hour drive isn't that bad.

Spoon minnows work the bestsenkosam wrote: Sun May 11, 2025 3:05 am Another suggestion is casting light jigs + plastics on the flats and on the drops. Sometimes trolling crankbaits gets some nice crappie in water 6' deep.

Elsinore Derby
Fished an Elsinore Derby on Sat. It is a 5 species tournament, lmb, wipers, catfish, carp and crappie. Conditions were horrible strong winds and freezing. My cousin brought his little boat out from San Diego. It was extremely difficult to fish, the wind was blowing us around like crazy. I couldn't ...

Re: Yuma panfishing
Senkosam,
On the canals in Yuma, there is current.
Trolling is impossible, if you’ve fished the canals. “No boats”
Those ultra lite jigs are not fishable in heavy current you’ll never get them to decent deep enough.
Drop shotting or heavy split shot is about the only way I’ve had any success ...

May 2025 Panfish
May ... hammering the panfish as usual. Monthly best went 2.28 lb. from San Vicente on a nightcrawler. Also that day, caught lots of bass up to 3 lb and a dozen other nice bluegill fishing live bait in a cove area near brush. I often find the bite picks up late in the day.
