Mission Beach 11/23

The mornings are starting to get a little chilly!! Hard to feel the bait as I set up the early casts đŸ„¶

Shorter hours for me today since the bite died earlier than yesterday, and I used that experience to just shut things down instead of holding out hope for any last nibbles. First cast was in the water shortly after 6:00, and I pulled in four perch by 7:00; three were husky, and one may have been experiencing its first week on Earth it was so small! The bait must’ve been half its body weight
 I suppose I can relate 😂

And after those four, absolutely nothing. No bites. I moved around a bit and had a few more nibbles but I started to pack things up by 8:30 and was outta there by 9:00, leaving the beach to all of the visitors in town for the holiday. Lotta people out there, relatively speaking.

Mussels were all I used, save for a couple casts with Gulp camo worms later in the session as I was searching for any signs of life. I didn’t see any seals or dolphins around so not sure why the bite stopped so abruptly both days this weekend other than “just because”. Tide was coming in fairly strong by the time I was finishing, but the water was mostly clean all morning.

Thanks for the weekend reports Joe. You fishing south near LG station or north by BP ? Some slab size (12"+) perch have been taken recently at BP, T 12 - T14 area.

Not entirely sure of the street marker but north of BP but still pretty far south of the pier. It’s been easier to just start (and stay) out of the way of the surfers and surf camp, which have all been pretty much at the lifeguard tower (Grand Ave) lately.

Thanks again for the continuing report! I don't know if you've tried this...I like to take the lip from bigger mussel, just the lip, and thread it up my hook, like a worm. It stays great on the hook for hard casts and the trailing 2" below the hook looks like a worm as you retreive it along the bottom. I'd love for you to try the dried lug worms, can you PM me you address and I'll send over a pack for you to try?

cool to see they still biting. winter fishing can be tough in general in SD. I typically stop surf fishing when it gets this cold and stick to fishing from dry land.

Hey there, Bill. PM sent!

You've mentioned threading the lips like this before and I've tried something similar, usually when I have "leftover" bait from a catch. I kinda wrap it around the hook, add a little more elastic, and toss it back out there. I'll have to bring some whole mussels the next time I'm out there this week to have more lip to work with (I've been cutting them in half before leaving the house).
