El Cap Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Post by JWall »

Headed out with the girl about 5:30 and plenty of boats had already launched. Ramp is darn close to its end but ok for another day, week, maybe two. @Moose was right on from yesterday, fish are on the chew. Saw that topwater shad trapped against the shore right away. We had stopped just shy of where the floating toilet in the North End used to be. Picked up 3 quick ones throwing the Cabelas ghost minnow on a 1/16 jighead on my BFS setup. Had the girl ready to go with reapers but twice she made a mess of that reel. With it being out of action for the day, I put her on a 6” margarita mutilator but switched to the steeper east side. A good move as we both started getting them on the mm. I had also tied on a pumpkin jig with a green Powerbait Summercraw trailer and decided to try that. Sure enough it was getting hit. Seemed like everything in the box was working. As I approached a rockpile I tossed the jig up close and before it hit bottom I was on. It was big. HUGE! It started a long series of trips around the boat, out to the middle then back to the rocks to saw me off. I nursed that bad boy on 10lb about as delicately as I could, thinking PB all the way. We finally got a glance and da***t it was a big blue. Not a giant as they get enormous, but certainly a test coming in at 17-4. It was a beaut and we got him back in the water as soon as photos were snapped. Had to go back to the 2-3lb bass lol but bagged a few more then were headed home at 10am. 14 bass lipped, a few early released, and one fat cat!!

Bass fishing on a holiday looks like you had a lot
I guess I always try to avoid holidays to go fishing, but real fishermen like yourself don’t get scared off. Glad you were able to launch and in between catching bass, I bet that catfish was quite a fight.
Thank you so much for sharing and tight lines always buddy :-)

Thanks Maestro! It was a bit crowded, especially now that the lake is a mere pond 😉

Front of the lake was much slower. I got in the water around same time you did, got one within the first 10 minutes and then one off a rockpile around 8:30. Front of the lake was also super crowded today. Didn’t really get to fish any of the spots I had planned, I’d kick over to a spot and there’d either be a boat or a group of bank anglers on it. Had to improvise a little, that’s fishing sometimes. Still a fun morning but wasn’t the bite I was hoping for. Glad you had a kickass day!

I was looking for you Jeremy. Were you still there around 10 in the dam arm? We were grabbing lunch above at the tables before leaving when we saw an basshole fly by full speed within 20 yards of a tuber. Idiot.

I didn’t kick all the way to the dam arm today. Maybe I should’ve! There was a group of guys in Tubes that kicked way out there. I fished till 10ish and I was on the rockpile by the dock the last probably 40 minutes.

Glad to see you guys got on em today. I stayed out front for most of the day yesterday and there weren’t many boats out there. Seemed like everyone was running to the breaking fish in the North End.

I got a 21.2 blue out there on a lipless crankbait. Hell of a fight but o kind of figured after it didn’t surface in the first couple of minutes it was either a catfish or I snagged a carp!

The lack of a jump should have been my first clue 😉
