Barrett Lake May 14th report

Post by Early release »

Hi all,

Got started in the darkness at Barrett, which is a personal favorite of mine. Met Chuck and we headed out around 0500, air was cool, but water was 67F at the surface. Played around in the main lake for a bit. Soft plastics ( Lizard, beaver and some strange thing from Googan squad) were working pretty well. The usual jigs were also hitting the fish pretty well. Chuck was doing great with swim jigs and some topwater. We then headed toward pigs, and shore pounded the main lake with topwater. My favorite black popper was working and he had a silver popper and some other topwaters. I couldn't get anything on the crawlers though. Separated at where the lake curves to the back, I went to the rock island and he went to the rock wall and bay in the beginning of pigs. Soft plastics ( mostly the lizard, I tried a strange bug one and the fish agreed that it was nothing they ever seen either, so that's out of the rotation ) and the bitsy with a trailer were working for me.

I headed back to Hauser and we had some fun with the topwater again. I also almost donated a rod to the lake. It was windy and I got snagged. I drifted into the dead trees and then started to pedal my kayak out. One of the trees somehow grabbed the line on one of my rods, and pulled it out of the boat. As I am fighting the wind, trying to turn back to the rod, I see it dancing in the wind. I'd just like to apologize to anyone who heard me swearing in every language I could use. I did get the rod back.

Did see some super small shad and you can zoom into the picture below. It's good to see the baitfish, I miss the schools of them and the busters they produce. Got off the water around 1400 and it was warmer and the water climbed up to 69F. Wind ranged from dead calm until 0930 to pretty substantial at times.

Have fun out there.

Glad you got the rod back! I need to try a black popper in those pre-dawn hours.
