10/31-PB SD River bass

Decided to skip a trip to Murray and headed out to the SD river. Got there around 7:30 and there was even more surface area covered with a green film than last week. I imagine that with some good winter rains it will be able to flush out a lot of this yucky green water. On the positive side, after a few casts, it made my green braid line ever greener...ha ha Started off with a crank bait and later switched over to an underspin. Not much later, I decided to start flippin' as that is one thing that I have had my most success with the last number of years at the river. Started working a brushhog and I flipped it into some sunken branches and suddenly the line was heading out away from the shore. The bass in the SD river really fight hard and when I set the hook, I knew I had a nice bass because it started taking out drag and I set my drag pretty tight. The fight was on as it started digging in and it came out of the water 2 times and I just was hoping so much it would not come off. I finally landed it and being very jazzed is an understatement.
This bass weighed 7lbs 3oz and the biggest bass I have ever caught at the SD river. A PB for the river. I continued to flip and did not stay as long as I normally do, and landed a small bass on a craw bait and an even smaller one not much later on that same bait.
Trying to land the bass below was scary, but after all it is Halloween! :-)
Tight lines everyone

I blame Lake Murray for me not using Tokyo rigs as often as I used to. I used to catch a lot of nice fish using them at Murray. But they lowered the water level two years ago to the point where it’s not that deep along most of the tulles I used to fish so the Tokyo rig bite has not been good. That is why most of my fishing the last so many months there has been in deeper water.
Anyway, going back to the Tokyo rig question…so since I just haven’t been using them, I just started sticking to a Texas rig with a sinker stop to flip baits at the river.

Landed some 6'er's down at the river, but finally topped it with this bass.
Yeah, lots of skinny bass at Murray this year on topwater baits, yet my biggest bass ever on topwater was a 7 1/4 pounds on a IMA Skimmer there about 10 years ago. Hopefully there will be some fatbass caught this winter on jigs, spoons and ice jigs as the topwater bite has been fading away.

Yeah, it’s hard not to have a big smile when I was lifting that bass up for pics.

Wow……I never thought of that.
That bass had to eat a lot of shad, bluegill and crawdads to get that big.

They are definitely eating trout…. Brown speckled corn trout.
