Surf Fly Fishing
I knew fly fishing was pretty common inside the bays, but I recently discovered it's also quite popular out in the surf as well. I'm starting this thread to gain a little more information about it from anyone here who might fly fish the surf. I suppose my initial question would be what type of jigs are you throwing; are they a traditional size or a step larger?

Re: Surf Fly Fishing
I keep it simple. If blind casting into structure, red worm-like flies (Krabby patty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iplF2Q7Oo5I). If sighting fishing beans, surfin merkin. I keep them small, size 6-8 hooks, small brass eyes.
You need a line with a fast sinking head (6ips) and intermediate running line. Don't forget a stripping basket.

Re: Surf Fly Fishing
Lately I've been out in the surf with the fly rod every weekend - North Torrey, Blacks, Mission and Coronado mostly. I'll be at Coronado dog beach on Sunday with the 6 weight throwing red worms or merkins. A few weeks ago a guy in our club was throwing a micro clouser and caught a striper. The 6 is my go-to rod unless we get a good onshore breeze, then I step up to an 8 weight to buck the wind.

Also I wrote a much more extensive primer (16 pages) for the SD Fly Fishers club clinics I used to do. Its a PDF file. If anyone wants it, PM me with an email address and I will send it as soon as I can get to it. No cost. No need to come into the shop.
It's due for an update, but I haven't got around to the update yet and the changes would be minor. It will come from my stroudtackle.com email address.
