After some debate I headed to San V on Friday for the first time since Easter. I was shocked to see how far the water has come down since then. The waterfall in the back of Barona is high and dry by 30ft!
Immediately saw bass crashing the shad against the banks so I had high hopes for some top water action. I got three on top but it clearly wasn’t the deal. Tried Flukes, crankbait, chatterbaits, and a swim jig for nothing. When the sun got up I picked up the dropshot rod. First cast, fish. Second cast, fish. I think you can see where this is going. I ended the day with 23 landed and at least as many lost in the bushes. Most of the fish I landed could have been put in an aquarium but I got a few better ones in the mix, including my 23rd and last fish of the day that was super fat and went 4.6. It looked like it was MAYBE a 3lb fish. Color didn’t matter, deep or shallow didn’t matter, part of the lake didn’t matter. Everywhere I went and everything I threw got bit.
Returned yesterday and started in Toll Road, where I finished up on Friday. Actually had a fairly steady top water bite until a wakeboard boat started pushing 3ft waves crashing against the shoreline. Picked up the dropshot and picked up where I left off Friday. Ended yesterday with 27 by 1pm when I left. Overall size was better with most fish at least being pound and a half or so. Couple of solid 2lbrs in the mix.
If you want to work on dropshotting, or want to teach someone how to dropshot, head to San V now. The bite is ridiculous! Realized why I love San V so much except for the wakeboard boats.
