Pacific Beach Tuesday July 15

I fished the surf south of Crystal Pier this morning about 9-10:15 on incoming tide. The pier is open and plenty of lines were in the water. Water is noticeably warmer than Friday when I was out surfing, but still not over 70. Huge beds of surf crabs everywhere, but you’d be wise to be picky and ...

Pacific Beach 7/20

A variety this morning; started off at 05:30 with a dinner plate size ray followed by a small leo. Perch bite was slow at first but turned on around 6. Got 10 overall plus a mid size corbina, about 14", over next 1.5 hours, mostly on sand crabs but a few on some left over ghost shrimp. Perch mostly ...

Re: North County trips.

Went this morning 7:45 to 11. Perchapalooza only. Used crabs, only caught perch. Switched to swim bait for 1/2 hr, nothing.
Back to crabs = perchapalooza. Switched to LC for about 45 min, nothing. Saw 4 others fishing, saw them only catching perch on crabs.

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

Lots of good stuff here. For Surf fishing I fill 1/2 my spool on a 2500 size spinning reel with 20 lb braid and tie on with your knot of choice, some quality 10 pound Mono.(I use a glued Albright) I fill the reel as much as I can without it spilling off. Then go launch some casts with a 4 ounce ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

The casting of a bare heavy weight to “wet pack” the line is a great idea… my wife used to fish spinning a lot in the past and when we would leave the dock, I would let all her line out behind the boat (nothing attached) and pack it back on, pretty much solved any spinning reel issues throughout the ...

Re: Where are the corbina??

If you are willing to head North I can prolly put you on some Corbs sight casting, although I’ve had Leo’s and Stripers rush the Crabs and make me wish I was fishing a little heavier. I throw 6 pound mainline and 8 pound flourocarbon leader, from an hour before sunrise until the swimmers push us out ...

Mission Beach 7/26

Early start at Mission Beach today, but the perch must all be at Comic-Con as I didn’t catch a single one. I wasn’t even getting many bites, the sand crabs stayed pretty much intact.

The morning was saved by a nice size croaker, which I actually caught fairly early on.

Other than that it was ...

Re: blacks mixed bag 7/20

I made it to blacks yesterday, thanks for this thread—first time. I took the glider port instructions. The scenic views and hang gliders were truly incredible. It was the first high tide of the day, and the current was ripping south with large and small vegetation roaming with it—no Bueno.
I caught ...

Re: North County trips.

Squidco had Ghost Shrimp, I stopped there on my Bonefish quest, got some good info and 8 dozen Ghost Shrimp. Spendy but I wasn’t going home until I caught one and saved money by sleeping in my Truck. I got several on my 2nd dozen then opened up the Ice Chest to all that wanted to try them. We landed ...

Del Mar afternoon 07/26

Fished Del Mar for a few hours late afternoon. Crowds weren’t too bad. Water was dirty but not too much salad to snag on. Started off with landing two small YFC right away. Nothing for the next hour or so until this Corvina took a liking to the Gulp Sandworms of all things. Fought much harder and ...

Re: blacks mixed bag 7/20

Blacks has been AMAZING this year. Some of the best soft structure I've seen in the past few years. The spotfin were schooling and tailing like crazy in April/May, and now the corbina are charging in the waves.

Quality Over Quantity - Mid Summer Surf Report

Sight-fishing between Blacks and Del Mar has been "excellent" this season, except for the whole catching part. This year is the first time I've seen spotfin tailing in the surf, but almost like a first-cast-curse, I've only been able to catch the first one I spotted (pun intended) in late May, using ...

Re: North County trips.

Yesterday afternoon, I took a 6-pound test C-rig to Del Mar to catch ANY fish I could on the lightest line I have ever used in the surf. But the current and the kelp were pretty bad where I landed in the reef/sand section, and I was too lazy to move. I went the longest so far this summer without ANY ...

Redondo Beach 8/1

I found a few croakers, rays and this above average Corbina yesterday in close with soft shell crabs. Then this special guest star bit surprisingly hard.

Mission Beach 8/2

SKUNKED!

I was due for a skunk session.

Lots of grass, weird tide. Nice weather, at least.

Guess I’ll just have to get back out there another day.

Khloe's 1st fish

So I have this new unofficial daughter that lives with me(long story, dont ask) and she has never gone fishing. Need to fix that.

First trip was supposed to her and 1 of my godsons at TP. Turned into a bunch of people and a big hassle, and not much fishing. A few fish were caught anyway, but not by ...

Re: Redondo Beach 8/1

Awesome outing. I’m new to SD county. Noticed what looks like a corkie or bead by the hook. I haven’t seen that before.

The 6mm orange bead emulates sand crab roe. I believe it helps attract fish to the bait and then they decide to bite, or not. Sort of, "Come look at me, I'm a soft shell crab ...
