Re: DIY Rod Tube holder advice needed

Only six? Pssht..... There's always the right side for six more! ;)

Here it is, about to go out on the water for a test run. I wasn't sure if it was going to tend to lean away from the tube or in towards the tube. On the water, it tends to lean in towards the tube. Probably need to use shorter ...

Re: DIY Rod Tube holder advice needed

Looks very nice but you need to add provision for a depth finder
There is a provision, just not with the rod tubes.

I made a modified version of the Scotty 266 Float Tube Rod Adapter. The rod adapter portion was replaced with a wood block with a rail mount, then a standard fish finder transducer ...

MB quickie

Hit MB before work today, could only fish for about 45 mins. High tide with marine layer. Got 2 small spotties and 1 small mackerel. The mackerel took the fly on the surface as I was starting the next cast. Nice way to start the work day but all day I just want to go back to fishing.

Re: MB quickie

Where in MB? Do you just rinse off your gear and keep it in your car for the day? Near De Anza Cove. At morning high tide, the fish were almost within (fly) casting distance from shore.

I keep jugs of fresh water in the truck and rinse off my gear after fishing. Flies/lures get thrown into a ...

Re: Backbay Report

The stingrays were acting like that about a month ago outside ACH off Shelter Island. Groups of about 4 or 5 chasing each other and breaching the surface, it looked like a bait fish boil from a distance. You're probably right, some sort of mating behavior.

Soupfin(?) at TL

The usual suspects at TL this morning (buts and spotties) when this was caught. I wish I could say it was on a fly, but it was on a dead drifted anchovy. Small soupfin? Sorry for the poor quality photo, the sun was behind me.

Spoon fed fishies

MB in the morning and decided to try a spoon fly. It produced, got a couple croaker, some spotties, and a small halibut (which came off when I tried to pull it into the tube by the leader). The takes seemed more aggressive on the spoon fly vs other flies this morning. It’s a relatively easy tie and ...

Re: Spoon fed fishies

Nice. Did you make the spoons too?
I used a product called Kiley’s Spoon Skinz. However, there are templates on the internet you can download to print on clear plastic sheets from Staples and cut them yourself. I mixed in some fine glitter sparkles with the epoxy to give it color and flash. The ...

Spotties using new technique

My right hand has carpal tunnel and it's been painful casting and stripping line for extended periods of time.

I borrowed a technique used by stillwater guys, using a floating line, long mono leader, and break-away strike indicator. The idea was to adjust the leader length below the indicator to ...

Re: 7-28 Not Hot but Steady!

The bridge traffics isn’t bad on the weekend and if you go early enough. Another option is the boat launch at Pepper Park, it might be a bit closer to the bridge than Shelter Island.

Re: Footlong mini tuna salad!

Bonito.jpg Yep, went out this morning (Sunday) and got into them BUT LEFT MY FLY ROD IN THE TRUCK!! Arghhh, had to settle for using a baitcaster and a Battlestar plug. They were busting the plug as it sat still on the surface, so I'm sure a popper would have worked well (when they're running like ...

Re: gear suggestions

Hi Tom, my preference is hip waters, but I sit on a cushion so my butt doesn't get wet. I have Frogg Toggs Rana II hip waders (super cheap, less than $50) and they're comfortable and durable. I don't think it's cold enough in San Diego to necessitate neoprene, I use wool socks and a thermal leggings ...

Re: Rule or reg to wear red/orange on tube?

The Lake Miramar website mentions float tubers must have a horn or whistle. That rule is most likely never enforced either.

That video and picture are wild! What a moment to capture on video, thanks for sharing! I'll be checking the skies next time I have a fish on the line.
