Creek Wade 6/13

Decided to wade a local creek, and was able to pick up several sunfish although the bass wouldn't cooperate. Was using an olive beadhead bird of prey from tfs that has worked well in the past for pretty much everything, although as of late it hasn't worked the same. My guess is the continued cold ...

Re: Creek Wade 6/13

Beautiful spot. The bass in my local creek are also sluggish, but I managed a few on a babyfat minnow. I've also had success in the past on a Pat's rubber legs.

First Bean(?)

SD Bay was good Sunday (7/16) morning. Caught (what I think) was my first bean on the fly rod (yes, it's small). I thought corvina's mouths were more bottom oriented, but made this one's a juvenile? It had little barbels on its chin like a catfish. Can anyone confirm?

Spotties made a decent showing ...

Dinks chase the blues away

It’s been a rough weekend, simultaneously had to deal with a broken water heater and a broken microwave. The family was not happy.

Finally got things sorted by midday Monday, so decided to hit a favorite spot with the float tube, a 5wt glass rod, and a conehead bunny leech I tied. Caught a couple ...

Fly fishing from Tidelands

Launched my kayak from tidelands this morning and fished around the bridge and various flats in the vicinity. Fairly slow morning but sunny and beautiful. Caught a few bay bass, a smelt and a nice sculpin at one of the Coronado bridge pylons which was surprising. I caught fish on flies I tied ...

Coronado Surf Fly Fishing

Hit up the surf this morning at Coronado with my 8 weight and 300 grain full sink line. Caught a large guitar fish that took me into my backing and also 3 perch. It was cold and the bite died when the tide started coming in too high. Got a burrito at my favorite breakfast burrito place on the way ...

Re: Fly fishing from Tidelands

It's always fun catching fish on flies you've tied yourself. I'm continually amazed that fish sometimes fall for my god-awful creations. I'm currently experimenting with spoon flies (purists, avert your eyes) thinking their oddball movement might attract some attention. I'm also focusing on small ...

Re: Fly fishing from Tidelands

Have you ever tied a fly using your own hair? Serious question. I would imagine an enthusiast would have to try it just to see.

I have. Growing up, my mom was the family hairstylist, always cutting my extended family's hair. My parents got me one of those fishing encyclopedia books and they had ...

Lower Owens Winter Fly Fishing Trip

Euro nymphed the Lower Owens River last weekend which was super fun and rewarding. I went with the local Golden State Fly Casters club here in town and caught nearly 20 trout each day! I have a 10 ft 3 weight shadow X euro rod which helps me tight line nymph and feel every bite. I only used typical ...

Henshaw has been great.

The past two weekends I've been going out with Tubefly . I've been exclusively sight fishing for Carp, but Bill doesn't have the patience and vicinity-fishes with an indicator. I got four carp last week and six yesterday, and lost a whole bunch more. But more importantly, I had the most shots on ...

Spotties using new technique

My right hand has carpal tunnel and it's been painful casting and stripping line for extended periods of time.

I borrowed a technique used by stillwater guys, using a floating line, long mono leader, and break-away strike indicator. The idea was to adjust the leader length below the indicator to ...

Re: Footlong mini tuna salad!

Bonito.jpg Yep, went out this morning (Sunday) and got into them BUT LEFT MY FLY ROD IN THE TRUCK!! Arghhh, had to settle for using a baitcaster and a Battlestar plug. They were busting the plug as it sat still on the surface, so I'm sure a popper would have worked well (when they're running like ...

East Walker River Still Going Strong | Mid September Fish Report (Video

I'm sure some of you have heard about the fish kill that happened mid August on the East Walker River but if not here's a link to the WON article https://wonews.com/fish-die-off-strikes-east-walker-river/

Thankfully it seemed to only affected the Miracle Mile and upper sections of the river. Fish ...

Re: Looking for a trout reel

I use sienna and sedona 1000 and 2500 respectively and love them both, I might check out the stratic when its time to upgrade/replace but I have never retired a shimano reel of any kind that I bought new or used.

Re: Looking for a trout reel

How’s the vanford do you guys like it? does it live up the height of being so smooth and light?

I love it… I use the 3000 for 95% of my fishing.. Mostly surf for corbina, croaker and perch…. But I’ve caught some decent halibut, large SNGF and pretty good size leopard sharks with it… I bought ...

Kudos to sdfish.org

As we start the new year, it is nice to see the site being a lot more positive and more fishing oriented than the old sdfish.com.

I think adding some fishing articles on lakes, bays and species like the old site had would be a plus though and bring in more visitors, such as at https://web.archive ...

Re: Kudos to sdfish.org

This is what I came up with https://blog.sdfish.org
I'll need to make some minor changes and add blog links to the forum but other than that it's ready to go.
