Re: Sd River Channel advice
If they were mullet, that might explain why they weren’t hitting my jerkbait. I was working it right through them , maybe what I thought was a strike was just me running over one with my plug.
On the old SD forums I think I only ever saw one mullet that was caught (lipped) with bass baits. Most ...

Re: Monterey and vicinity
Seeing 30 foot surf from the beach will just look like lots of whitewater almost everywhere, unless you have a pier, or surfers for perspective. Up there, go out to Mavericks(HalfMoonBay) or Santa Cruz (Steamers Lane) to see the surf display. Sunday(today), you can tune into the Eddie Aikau contest ...

Quality Over Quantity - Mid Summer Surf Report
Sight-fishing between Blacks and Del Mar has been "excellent" this season, except for the whole catching part. This year is the first time I've seen spotfin tailing in the surf, but almost like a first-cast-curse, I've only been able to catch the first one I spotted (pun intended) in late May, using ...

Murray 'Gills
Fishing for bigger bluegills has been decent at Murray lately. A few on topwater but mostly on weighted flies, generally cast into deeper water. For reference, distance between end cap on butt end of reel seat and the front edge of the grip is 11". Rod is a 3wt 7 footer fiberglass custom built for ...

Mammoth Lakes fun!
If you like stripping streamers in shallow water, now's the time up here! I've picked up 42 fish in 2 days, ranging from 12" to 23". I'm fishing the flats in the back of Lake Mary, mostly stripping black leaches with a flashback hares ear trailer. 11 of the fish were between 20"-23" and caught in 2 ...

Tarpon on the fly in Belize
Went on a vacation to Belize. Wasn't a fishing trip but hired a guide for a half-day morning trip on of the days we were staying at one of the Cayes. I didn't plan on fly fishing but the guide had two rods rigged up and one of the spots we stopped at had Tarpon swimming around. They didn't like the ...

Spotties using new technique
My right hand has carpal tunnel and it's been painful casting and stripping line for extended periods of time.
I borrowed a technique used by stillwater guys, using a floating line, long mono leader, and break-away strike indicator. The idea was to adjust the leader length below the indicator to ...

AZ Gila Trout
Recently moved to Flagstaff AZ from San Diego, and I figured y'all would find this interesting. I have been fishing Oak Creek Canyon heavily, catching wild browns, stocked rainbows, and native Gila trout. The Gilas seem to love dries, especially hopper reaction bites when the fly hits the water ...

Re: Bay reel recommendations
The Daiwa TWS (t-wing system) reels are awesome baitcasting reels, cast really far and very easy to cast without backlashes. I have only had mine for a few months but have other Daiwa reels that are over 40 years old. There are several different models, I have the smallest. I know others with the ...

Wednesday 8/16 HOT 🥵
Got to the lake @430, headed to Hauser, fishing in the dark and fighting the mosquitoes, bugs. Very slow for the first two hours, only managed 4 and two aggressive blue gills. Busters were around but didn’t last long after the sun came up. It was super hot and humid! Ended up at 20 bass 2 gills ...

5/25 report and mystery solved
Another great day on the water Sunday. Motoring out by 6, this time with a boat rental. We explored Pine Cove — haven’t been there for a while. Finally got some top water action going with my dad’s really old popper. I feel like I know what the action should be like now. Caught both large and small ...
