American Fisheries Society classifies nearly all sportfish into length indices that designate Stock, Quality, Preferred, Memorable and Trophy categories.
Lengths are used because they are generally less variable than weights (fish may lose weight but not length)
The lengths (in mm) for various ...

Re: What is a trophy panfish?
Pan fishing is my favorite. Havasu is the home of big Redear but our SD lakes have some brutes also. I have caught a few over 2lbs and 2 over 3lbs. For bluegill anything over 11" is a great fish. My personal feeling is a 12" fish is a trophy. My personal best is a touch over 13". That's a lot of ...

Re: Henshaw
I went out with @tubefly on Saturday chasing carp on the fly. We ran into a huge school of crappie about the size of a basketball court that was barely within reach of our fly lines wading up to our waist. Bill got four crappie but didn't take any pics so I don't think they're of any size.

Anyone that takes an Aluminum boat with a bare unpainted hull be sure to wash completely with a good detergent . Copper treated water drills holes in aluminum . Just a thought to keep in mind . WR

Re: TILAPIA IN LAKE HODGES (2024)
If they were the last fish to make it in the Salton sea, I’d imagine they wouldn’t be too impacted there

Murray Bluegill 09-22-24
Haven't kayaked Murray in years but lazy-launched the kayak into the breeze after lunch at like 1 pm. :)
Headed to the west side of the lake and was surprised the bass were crashing on bait very randomly, here and there. Threw some small stuff at them, hooked one on a spoon and I got a couple ...

Re: Otay
I went back for some more panfish action last Saturday.
Very nice day on the water. Wasn't really cold in the morning. Maybe 50 degrees. The water is still full of algae tho. Maybe even worst than the last trip. Only thing which was weird is that it didn't stick to the lines and split shots and ...

Re: Otay
Went back again. Water is clearing some. Bluegills slowed down a bit but the crappie bite picked up some.
Here's Dave with some nice ones. 8 total

Re: Crappies are on the move.
It was better for the last two nights, caught probably 30 each night. They are not wide spread yet but crappie nibble plus a right color lure can get them to bite easier. They are still full of eggs so I am not sure if they already spawning or just gathering around. All released for success spawning ...

2025 Lake Hodges Opener
Fished Hodges from my kayak on Wednesday Feb 5, with my Garmin Livescope. Overall, very slow fishing for bass and crappie for everyone! The lake is much lower than last year - remember that we had tons of rain in January 2024 and none so far this year. The water is a brown soup, visibility ...

Hodges and out past Ramona kayaking
I have not posted much but have been kayak fishing crappie between shore bay halibut trips and pond bass on weather days.
Lake Hodges 2/16 and 2/22. A few crappie and a couple nice bass both trips, some crappie released. Using various crappie jigs "out in the middle". Water temp 58 early and 62 ...

Elsinore Derby
Fished an Elsinore Derby on Sat. It is a 5 species tournament, lmb, wipers, catfish, carp and crappie. Conditions were horrible strong winds and freezing. My cousin brought his little boat out from San Diego. It was extremely difficult to fish, the wind was blowing us around like crazy. I couldn't ...

Otay 5/28
I had so much fun catching that crappie this week I decided to panfish Otay. It'd been a while since I'd done it and man was it fun. I caught 12 sunfish/bluegill a long with a bunch of bass. All the fish fell victim to a Megabass Griffon crankbait.
The highlight was a massive 2 1/4 pounder. I ...

May 2025 Panfish
May ... hammering the panfish as usual. Monthly best went 2.28 lb. from San Vicente on a nightcrawler. Also that day, caught lots of bass up to 3 lb and a dozen other nice bluegill fishing live bait in a cove area near brush. I often find the bite picks up late in the day.

June 2025 Panfish Santee Lakes
Have fished successfully at Santee Lakes for bluegill and bass lately. The hotter the better. I'm fishing my UL trout rod, usually no weight or float and getting some on the micro-popper too. If you have kids this is an easy place for catching fish, 4# or 6# fluoro line and small #10 mosquito hooks ...
