Beautiful and Hard Fighting. Pound for Pound one of the badest species that swims.

It's always fun running into those big chested ones.

What bugs do you like for tageting bluegill? I imagine just about anything would work. I was thinking of doing it just to keep my long-rod game sharp so I'm not rusty at the beginning of each Sierra trip.

Almost anything they can get in their mouths will work.

Commonly available trout nymph patterns like Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear, Zug Bug, and Prince Nymph with our without bead heads work well. Stick with larger sizes than you might typically use in the Sierra such as sizes 12, 10 and 8. The 'gills will often take flies deep and it can be hard to remove the flies through their small mouths. Bead head woolly buggers in olive or black also work well. Again sizes 12, 10, 8. Lots of other patterns work too.

For topwater, foam spiders or bluegill(panfish) sized poppers or sliders, again in size 12, 10, and 8. Also hopper patterns or other foam patterns commonly used for trout like the Chernobyl Ant work well.

You don't need a bunch of different patterns.
